A question that's stumbled me for a while. In a typical trance track, what portion of the sounds are synths and what portion are samples? The issue I have with trance are the little background sounds/fx that come in and out of the track at seemingly random points (but not really random) for the purpose of making an otherwise dry drum loop interesting. These sounds are usually the first sounds to come in to the track and the last to leave. They also combine with the drums/leads/vocals to create more substance in the music. How are these little sounds/fx usually made? If I want a particular sound do I attempt to make one on a synth or do I search 100s of sample libraries to find it? They can really make a track stand out so it would be nice to know how producers usually come up with them.

Check out "vengeance fx vol. 1 & 2". They are sample cds with lots of what your probably looking for. Also lots of background effects are still done with synths. Hope that helps

what u probably mean is sweeps... reverb/delay/whitenoise effects and alike..

It's generally a combination of both. If you have a large sample library of sounds & know what you're looking for (Vengeance are good) then that could save time. Also depends how hot your synth programming is. The problem with samples is sometimes you have to spend as much time playing around with them to make them fit your key or tempo. I find samples are good for fills (such as at the end of a 16th beat to add some excitement to the drum beat) but not so great for pads or sweeps.

If you need a sweep or pad that is going to fit your track then personally I reckon you need to programme in a synth as you can use the filter envelopes and automation so it fits perfectly in the mix.

...but then I'm no expert!!

most of the sounds (if not all) originates from synths. even kicks are made from synths. these sounds are then sampled and effects are applied to make them sound more interesting. and the end product becomes to what we all know as samples.

i thought a kick was just a recorded sound of a person kicking another person or an object... hmm.. i think this changes everything.

I bought a Roland MC303 cause I heard it was great for making dance music. Got home switched it on & it said "load sample" so I pee'd on it. Hasn't worked since!!
