Quick question regarding transfering my VSTs to an external drive....

So I'm going all external with production software. I was wondering if I can simply cut and paste my DAW (Ableton) and VSTs (numerous) to the hard drive. Every single one of my VSTs is installed to the same folder, so it's a pretty cut and dry process.

My main concern is registry errors. I really, really don't want to have to re-install everything. Registry problems will just be a huge headache because I'm wanting to use two different computers for production from the same HD. (Laptop while my lazy ass sits in bed, Studio PC when my lazy ass gets out of bed)

Thanks

As of Ableton the answer is No.

All depends on what vst's you've got some just use a .dll file so that would be no problem.

while others you would have to re-install them. They will add to the registry but also to windows systems file to.

But if you do get any major problems with your reg just use cc-cleaner and that should get rid of any broken links etc. just make sure you un-install all your vst's that don't work before you use cc cleaner so it gives it a fresh install.

And that's the reason why you have to install everything new on your new harddrive. You can't just simply copy and past software from one place to another.

A lot of plugins only work with *.dll files, these can easily be replaced, but if you simply cut and past the Ableton Live directory from one harddrive to another, you're just going to screw things up real bad.

It's not nice to hear, but you can better start a clean installation.

And btw, I don't know if it's a good idea running a sequencer and plugins from an external harddrive (I would never do it, except when I would buy a Muse Receptor).

Well I'm going to have 500 gigs. Are there any extra files, such as the registry or something, that will make it a smoother transition?

Another problem I foresee is one computer is Windows XP while the other is Windows Vista.

What about just leaving the current Abletons in place and running the VST's and sample packs off the external?

That would be a better idea, however I suggest that you'd keep you sequencer and VST's together.

As far as I know, the transition from XP to Vista shouldn't be a problem. It works with the same filesystem.
