Hi all,

Just wondering if somebody could help me out. I'm thinking of trying out Reason Record so want to plug my guitar and microphone into my pc, something I've not done before. I have an M-Audio PCI 2496 sound card. I'm presuming I need some sort of preamp in order to plugin guitar and mic? So what do I need thats well priced and does this then plugin to the sound card inputs?

perfect!! Cheers. Although was hoping I wouldn't have to plug in yet another usb device. I think that makes 10 in my pc!!

So what sort of device does it appear as in Windows? Is it an audio interface? Will Reason (record) and Cubase pick it up ok and works in conjunction with my current audio interface?

Honestly i dont use this myself i just hang around a lot of guitarists so knew they existed. multiple audio interfaces shouldnt be a problem. For example my cubase is set to use my Emu interface but the games I play just use my realtek onboard crappy thing. I dont even have to switch. record will have a routing option just set input as (guitar device?) and it should work as normal.

I just picked the first one i seen have a shop around. You are in uk not that it matters but the shop happens to be up the road from me, go to www.htfr.com and search guitar usb.

If you have a guitar effects processor (I use a Digitech RP155), just go from it straight into a decent sound card. I use an M-Audio Revolution card.

The guitar link is interesting, never saw that one before. I love USB stuff, so convenient. There are several brands of preamps other than this one, that plug into your soundcard. If you are using software guitar effects, you either need a decent sound card or one of these preamps. Guitar Rig 3 comes with a control device that has a built in sound card.

Cheers for the responses. I read the manual online and some reviews and it does support recording and plugging in to Cubase so I'm assuming the same will be true for Reason Record. It also has some decent reviews so bought one on Ebay last night.

As for other questions raised, I do have a semi-decent sound card, M-Audio 2496 which I use for production at the moment. My guitar is an Ovation Legend Acoustic which has pickup and built in pre-amp so should plug straight into the guitar jack.

I would reccommend spending a little more on a decent pre-amp.

Behringer offer a nice selection.

If recording guitar & vocals, you really want some options on levels and warmth.

You will not be disappointed at how well the recording comes out via a pre-amp.
