The hot soft-synths of today?

Hi everyone, was just wondering if you could list your favorite soft-synths and on what platform you use them on.

Other than some weak soft-synths that came with my Pro Tools LE, I only use a hardware Access Virus C synth and an old Korg Trinity. So I would like to know what the best software ones are for current trance production. Thanks for any info!

Native instruments synths, Rob papen synths, arturia synths are all good.

I don't have them, but allegedly, Gladiator, zebra, sylenth, alchemy are also good.

^^^yeah, those ones!

Omnisphere is also great, but expensive. If you want a rompler with a ton of trance sounds that are ready to go, Nexus2 is good, but also very expensive, especially once you start buying expansions, and relatively limited compared to a proper synth.

Thanks for all these great ideas. I produce mainly trance so I'm gonna look at possibly getting Rob Papen Predator and Blue, and the Native Instruments Absynth 5 and Massive. These all have RTAS capability so it'll work with my Pro Tools setup.

Also, I've always been curious on how those spacey white-noise build-up sounds were made and/or what synths are used. I hope I'm making sense - it's sort of like a fill-in that has replaced the old skool snare drum roll. Does anyone know?

I was going to buy the Spectrasonics Trio but after demoing the 2 Papen synths I'm in 2 minds now. Both are great synths, especially Blue. Subtractive, FM, Wave Shaping and Phase Distortion all in one. The FX, Arp and Modulation possibilities are all top notch too. Really simple layout as well, even though it's spread over about 10 pages everything is just a few clicks away.

Any synth with a noise oscillator can do white noise build-ups. Just assign a LP filter to it, modulate it with some LFOs then add FX if necessary.

Trilogy, Sylenth and Predator are great for basses. For pads Atmosphere is pretty much all I use, and for leads Zebra, z3ta+ and Nexus are good. NI's FM8 is good for pretty much everything.

Blue and Absynth are great, versatile tools. Just know that Blue is an FM synth, and Absynth is... well, it's a different beast entirely. Both of these are significantly harder to program than your Virus C and the Trinity. They are worth learning - but the learning curve can be steep if you're not already familiar with those synthesis methods.

Regarding buildups, white noise, etc., I suggest searching for that topic as there have been many previous threads about it.
