Hey people,

I have never ever bothered previously with my other monitors, but what is the best pathway to break in a new set of monitors?

Or, do you just go ahead and use, and limit the output

i dont know about these spesific monitors but a common rule it letting them play at pretty loud for four days (100hours) in order to soften them up.

I didn't intentionally go through a "break-in" process with mine. I just listen(ed) to reference tracks on them very frequently from the get-go to get used to hearing how they sound, not how they "should" sound. Yeah, the sound probably changed over time as they got worn in (along with changes in my studio/office), but it happened subtly over a long period of time, so I didn't notice it. It would be interesting to do a side-by-side comparison with a brand new pair though.

Glad to hear you got the HS80's in the end! This is good, sensible advice. Don;t bother breaking monitors in - by the time your actually used to them they wll be broken in. Listen to your favourite tracks and how they sound.

I doubt that 95% of people buying monitors could truly identify the broken in ones on an A/B test anyway.

I think with quality ones they could actually. No need for 100 hours of breaking in though.

I did the same as Cryo, just listened to a lot of my music on them at the start. Helps to break them in somewhat, plus you can see how your favourite music translates onto them.

I think it's important to note that, at least in my experience, headphones benefited more from a decent amount of breaking in than the monitors.

I agree - headphones do sound markedly different with breaking but I think it's quite subjective with monitors and some really don't benefit at all - I think the higher up you go the more necessary it is but I honestly reckon that by the time you get the feel for them they're already broken in so it becomes a bit of a mute point.

thats the problem I am facing, I really need a comparison set to tell the difference but even then its difficult i would think. Yeah i will just play some music through them and see how things go, and pay attention to the sound.

thanks people, and yeah im happy with the choice they look super sexy and im sure the sound will be there as well.

Edit: I left all the factory settings as arrived, I read through the manual based on positioning to walls etc, as well. made need some adjusting later on tho.

On a serious note the answer is a few hours perhaps a day or two. This is because a speaker or a ''monitor'' is a mechanical device with moving parts that need to settle in. This doesn't mean however that it won't sound good right out the box so start using them and within a few hours of use you're good to go.

There's an active thread on monitor placement - I suggest reading that but also figuring what works for your room.

The obvious pointers are:

1, The triangle
2, not too close together, not too close to you (i.e. not a tiny triangle, especially with those speakers)
3, Get stands or isolate them with auralex mopads if on a flat surface
4, Don't have them too close to the wall behind
5, Angle them in (toe in).
6, Don't mess with the settings unless you know what you're doing.
7, Avoid desk splash by raising them above the level of lateral reflection

EDIT: ok, you were joking and I agree with just using them - as I said before by the time you're able to get a feel from them they;ll be broken in already.

Thanks guys, yeah i wil upload apic in post pic of studio, they are a little close but for now im confined to a smaller space. but it wil work for now. they are angled in, and on some auralex pads as well, which you suggested (-;. The tweaters are at ear level too.
