Record label or Artist manager?

Sorry for maybe a foolish question, but what is the difference between sending a track to a record label and an artist manager?

An artist manager is a middle man between you and the party promoters/magazines and sometimes the labels too. They mainly exist to boost one's profile and are most usefull if you have a realistic long-term career plan.

An artist manager is only interesting when you're so popular that you're running short on time to do your own own administration work (self-promotion, negotiating, contacting promoters) or if they provide you extra benefits which you don't have on your own. In most cases: unless you travel across the globe on a regular basis having one isn't worth it (because they'll cost you more than they'll earn you).

I wonder whether globally acclaimed DJs/producers like Armin or ATB started with artist managers or record labels?

Labels of course.
You first need a release to kickstart your career as a producer.

Say, if i am successful enough to have my tracks released at labels, will a manager find me or is it me who will seek one?

It could be either. Be wary of the ones contacting you though and check their profile and artists they work for/with. I've had a couple which just offered very dodgy contracts.
