Basic Production Setup

I really want to get into music production. I currently have Audio 4 from Native Instruments and have Reason 4.0 and Pro Tools.

The question I have is in regards to hardware what other things do I need to pickup in order to effectively make some pro quality music. Will I be able to use Audio 4 as my soundcard or will I need something else to produce off my laptop. Thanks for any advice!

you need the SSL 4040 E/G console, and all your problems will be solved.

First, you should learn to produce music.

You are good to go imo. Though I think you can never have enough one shot samples, and samples in general. I think the more resources the better.

the thing is you'll probably have to demo out synths and such yourself. They all have their quirks and personalities, and it's up to you as an individual to ask yourself what type of sound you are going for. You might even waste your money on some stuff. It's all part of the growing pains of being a budding producer.

All you need to make pro tracks now is to bite the bullet and fail, fail, fail until you make a good song. It'll take some time to make a releasable song, let alone a quasi-releasable song. Endurance is half the battle.

Yeah, you need good monitors and or headphones, some VST synths, lots of good samples, lots of time and effort, and probably a better Host as well.

I'm guessing you have the version of Reason that came with your PT setup, so thats not really going to work that well for you. Also, if your running PT free or something, thats not going to work either. You NEED a DAW that can run at least 24 channels or you'll get pretty stuck.

Have a look into Reaper, its cheap and good, you can look into upgrading at a later time if you like the whole production thing.

Hi there,

I would have to agree with floyd741. It is more important that you gain an understanding of music and your software rather than worry what equipment you need. Saying that you have everything you need to start making tracks.

So i would suggest that you start to learn music theory and your software. I would personally recommend the Point Blank online music course in Trance that you might find interesting. Take a look:

This is most likely the most effective method to develop your learning but not the only method. I'm sure other forum members will offer you other alternatives.

Let me know what you think!!

Don't know about most effective. Definately most expensive.

I appreciate all your guys feedback. What I was referring to was in terms of controls, for example keyboards or beatpads.
