Question Need some good help (:

Hey guys,

Havent posted in here in a while. Still lurk here every now and then and watch the trolling and arguments unfold haha.

anyways.

This is my new track. I dont want feedback on the whole thing or anything like that. Its the percussion. well actually just the clap/snare.

I have tried to get a snare/clap to fit in and this is the closest I have got.

I have added a split click/clap which comes in, then another then another... all the claps/snares are working at 45 secs.

When the main drop happens and the percs come in and at 1:45 the clap sounds SO far back/

am I doing something wrong - I limit my percs and usually they sound fine but I dunno this clap is pissing me off I cant get it to sound how I want.. haha.

I tried compressing it differently - logic comps, waves comps and all of that stuff I dunno It just doesnt sound as i think it should and how I would like.. I havent run into this issue in while :/ haha.

any help please??

First off, welcome back, good to see you post here again John.

Slightly off topic but you'll notice a lot of oldschool people are back and it has somewhat to do with the fact the trolling is/will be stopping as it was getting out of hand.

On topic, It's really a case of change your clap; if ever you're really struggling to make a sound fit in it's usually just more efficient to switch it out to something you like and that works better.

I'm on crappy laptop speakers here at work so I can't hear that much but if might be the balance of reverb to dry signal. You can place things "above" or "back" in the mix by increasing the wet vs dry balance and I think that may be your issue. I don't know how you have your sends/inserts set up but you may want to ease back on the wet balance or even layer a dry double over the top, then compress the two together.

I was (for a second) thinking about something else may cause this problem but sound like DJ RANN right on with his observation - agree.

Cheers

The brightness of a sound contributes to how far forward/back it sounds. Make your kick and snare brighter, and they will come through more.

That's a great point - I sometimes forget/take for granted the basics which are so powerful. Bright/HPF = forward, dull/LPF = back

and thanks to the others too (:

Ill try doing that, I was sending to a short verb which may be the issue but I might try dropping the clap all together and see if I can fix it that way!

I find get a clap to sound good is so much more difficult sometimes than other things haha.

So just checking when you said " even layer a dry double over the top, then compress the two together"

you mean, have what I have now which is

**dry clap** has a send into waves short reverb
(add another dry clap and compress it into the first??)
Will that phase at all? or should I stereo it some more or something ?

is that what you meant?
Sorry I am sitting in a airport lounge in Buenos aires drinking Sav blanc haha. its almost 2:30 am! my mind is off, I will re read tomorrow though after some sleep lol!!

Thanks for replying fellars (:

Whats happening there quite simply is that when the main lead sound and the clap are playing, the clap is being masked by the lead but do you have a snare sound also hitting at the same time? hard to hear but i think there is definetly something else hitting at the same time as the clap? like a noisy snare...can be heard better in the outro

to test this just play your track in your sequencer and mute that lead sound and listen what happens to the mix

What I would do is make the clap sound a lot louder than it is but maybe a different clap might be better as the one you have now will always be fighting for space with the lead

I dont think a short reverb will help here due to the reverb on the lead - try some chorus instead, can help make the drums more upfront.

has no body. The snare lives in the mid lows. That is were the punch comes from. Found it cut just as much as it did with the melody. Not to my liking but ok given everything else. There are so many ways to fix it. change the sample. Eq the sample. Add to the sample when it isn't cutting. Side chain a group to make room for it like they do in modern dnb

But ya, I would say you need to ease of the highpass. The snare sounds like a hihat.
