This is actually what you do with surround mixing for score (which is why I think you know that one M4B )

You send channels (or groups like lo perc) with lower frequencies to a subharmonic synthesizer to create the frequencies needed for the LFE channel speaker (or the .1 channel).

That's how you get those deep boom sounds in the cinema....
