Depends on how much money you are willing to spend. Also which one are you more comfortable with.

Im asking regardless of money, for example if I have an amd 1.7 ghz 512 ram etc what spec of mac would show an improvment if i changed..i.e I keep seeing g4's but they only seem to run at about 1.2 ghz, so in what way are they better..how do they make the music making process, more powerfull and or easier..WHY do the proes tend to use them...?

It's because that's what they've been using, from back when pc's were no good for doing this kind of stuff.

Things have changed though... I really don't see why you'd want to get a mac, unless you plan to use PT, DP, or Logic.

You can't go by mhz when comparing mac's and pc's. A 1.2 ghz mac *should* easily beat your machine right now. But mac's are still slow... they're way behind speed-wise to the fastest intel and amd processors. And, let's not forget how much more expensive mac's are.

Granted, I think I may get a mac, just because logic is so awesome.

They don't 'beat' pc's... I've tried to explain this.

Traditionally, it's been mac's in studios. That's one of the major reasons why they're still (for the most part) there now.

However, OSX is (apparently) a much better operating system for audio production because it's been developed with that in mind. But XP is still excellent... definitely more than capable for professional work.

But things get more complicated when you deal with the whole software issue... there's a lot of good free (and commercial) stuff that you miss out on if you use a mac, but there's also some incredible software that's mac-only.

Tell me what gear you have now, and what software you plan to use and perhaps I can help you more.
