FL Studio 4 is a good start
If you want to start producing, start with a program like FL Studio 4 Producer Edition, and maybe invest in some upgrades for your computer. FL Studio 4 is pretty easy to use, extremely versatile, and can to a certain degree give you an idea of what all that hardware stuff does and how to use it. As stated in an earlier post, you'll want a fast computer, but you also want a good soundcard...preferably one with audio in's as well as outs. You can also try hooking your computer up to your home stereo system if you have a reciever. After you've gotten comfortable using your computer you'll probably get a good idea of what kind of hardware you'll to want to buy if any. Hardware is expensive and can eat up a lot of space, but some people really enjoy the "hands on" feeling they get from turning dials and what not. Hope that helps.
