Hi,

You can do everything with a fast computer. If you have a pc, you can use sequencers like Cubase and Cakewalk Sonar (wich is cheaper), and use VST instruments (Or DXi in Sonar)in them. These are software synthesizers.
Logic is also a good sequencer but it only developped for Mac.

There are some topics here about VSTi's:

Some plugins require a lot of processor power, but there is a new program that let's you use cpu power from other computers over the network. It works very good. http://www.fxteleport.com

Yes, the current versions also work on a PC, but Logic (or the company that makes it) made a deal that makes all future releases of Logic appear on Mac only.

FL Studio 4 is a good start

If you want to start producing, start with a program like FL Studio 4 Producer Edition, and maybe invest in some upgrades for your computer. FL Studio 4 is pretty easy to use, extremely versatile, and can to a certain degree give you an idea of what all that hardware stuff does and how to use it. As stated in an earlier post, you'll want a fast computer, but you also want a good soundcard...preferably one with audio in's as well as outs. You can also try hooking your computer up to your home stereo system if you have a reciever. After you've gotten comfortable using your computer you'll probably get a good idea of what kind of hardware you'll to want to buy if any. Hardware is expensive and can eat up a lot of space, but some people really enjoy the "hands on" feeling they get from turning dials and what not. Hope that helps.
