I studied piano, singing and music theory and composition for years growing up. I was all gung-ho to try my hand at making trance. I finally got a copy of FL3.5 back in May, and I still haven't been able to make a track that I'm really happy with yet!! It takes a long time to learn how to best use the software, to develop an ear that lets you identify what's missing in your track, and the experience to decide the best way to go about adding/changing your mix. This site has helped me already (I just discovered it two days ago) I just went back and remixed a song I thought I had done well, and found a whole bunch of new things that I could make better. Things I didn't even know to look for before. And I'm realizing more and more that there's still alot further I can go.
Keep in mind that it's not just the melody itself that defines the mood of the tune, but the way a melody interacts with the bass and the other sounds. Harmony is very important. It might help while you're trying to get the melody to sound right to mute all the drums and effects, and just listen to the bass, harmony (pads, etc) and melody and how they interact. If you can find a good balance there without drums and effects, when you put them back in, it'll be all the better.
My advice is to just keep plugging away at it. Bit by bit you'll develop a feel for how to make the software do what you hear in your head. Obviously since you've been DJing for a while you know what you want to hear next, so just have patience.
Oh yeah, check out my website below. All the songs on it were made with FL3.5, and only using sounds that came with it. Now I will say that the mastering SUCKS!!! I had no idea about the technical side of things when I made those tracks, but have a listen anyways!
