Read this in a production magainze...

The active studio monitors are designed to take abuse unlike their commercial counterpart, the hi-fi speakers. Their amps are designed to quit before any permanent damage is done to the drivers (ultra-high frequencies or wattage).

Moreover dedicated monitor amps perform better crossovers than passive monitors with external amp. Active monitors are the way to go.

I've got a pair of the Alesis M1 active MKII's and they are pretty damn good...they sound very raw and not missleading like the Yamaha NS10's(not comparing the too though...the NS10's were very popular because they sounded so bad and if you could get a mix sounding good on them well then...you get the point...thats what i read many times over anyway), anyway i wouldn't sugest having the volume too max(10) keep em around 7 or 8 that should do just fine...but the key is to always monitor what your putting into them anyway. the dude who said they are more efficient then thier counter parts was right exactly..you see active monitors(these ones in this case) have internal cross overs that send freaquencies to each high and low proportionaly. This just means you get a more proper sounding spectrum. To answer your question ...well...just don't pump constant clipping sound into them...i'm sure even with the reject function you can blow a tweeter or two. The tweets are very fragile.
