Question A metallic touch?

Hi,

Sorry for not posting a sample of this, but I'm trying to have my bass sound more metallic. One example is the bass in a track I recently heard, Miika Kuisma - Ambush, but I'm sure that metallich touch is to be found in many other productions and works.

My question is, does the sound have to be metallic in itself, or is there an easy way to create a metallich touch by adding some kind of effect? I know this is a bit vague, so ask follow-up question if you think that's needed, and I'll try to reply.

Cubase has a metalizer effect, that might be what you need. Do you have a sample perchance? Also the pro-53 can make some nasty distorted metallic sounds if you have the knobs set just so.

Frequency Modulation helps create the metalic sound. Ring Mod can also be of assistance, but FM is where its at.

fm all the way
check out the dx 200 from yamaha !!
you can do some good stuff with the regular va's too, most of the multitimbral have fm implementation (remember to set your osc to sine) but it can't compare to dx7 cause it had 6 oscillators. (dx 200 hax 6, called operators in fm synthesis language )

check it here
you can do anything with it going from soft electric piano's to crazy leads and efx

here are some of my examples. Some acid lead, elec piano, and some crazyness at the end bell-efx alike fm in combination with overdrive makes your ears hurt

as said before go for the ring modulators but also try starting off with a square wave, that is usually pretty metallic sounding right from the start. careful tho it can sound shite very easily

a square wave does not sound metallic..
it's all about frequency modulation period. Sometimes a rm can give good effects too.
