Yes "Hats"... I struggle with them!

I've been producing for about 2-3 years now, but I can never fit my hi hats nicely into the mix and they always seem out of place.

Could anybody give me a description of where to place the different kind of hi hats? For instance are the open hats meant to be centre, or panned left and right?

I could give you a loop if it would be easier to tell what I'm doing wrong, but I have'nt any webspace.

Any help would be appreciated... Thanks!

well, don't make them too loud, and try adding a slight delay to them, play around with the settings, also mess about with the pitch (does it sound better up a note?) also try lots of different samples until you find one that works well with your mix

I usually keep my open hats in the centre and pan the closed hats.
I also use multiple layers of closed hats, all playing a different pattern, possibly slight amount of delay on each pattern as well. When you combine all the layers you usually get a pretty thick and driving hat pattern

The main problem that I have is where to actually place the hats in the mix. I will make a loop and feel that its sounding good, but when I listen back the next day it always sounds too mono, if you know what I mean?

I use RM IV for all my drums by the way.

dont just use hats then, use a whole bunch of things for your percussion ! then all you'll probably need is one open hat in the middle

1- lower da volume of hats
2- give it a delay & little amount of reverb
3- try lots of samples to see which one is the best

the sample without the bass sounds fine but the one with the bass sounds terrible, what exactly are you doing? are you applying some kind of compression to the mix?

Yeah I agree the one with bass sounds terrible. I think I left a comp on the master while rushing this morning.

I'm more interested about opinions on the hats in the drum loop, do you think they sound ok?
