Ya its probally your speakers. If its the primary one with a dell, im asuming its just a sound blaster which arent that great for producing but do work. If its onboard sound, lol, you'll need a new card.

Notes:
If you are experiencing a delay between the time when you press and key and when sound comes from your VST/AU instrument, be sure ASIO is turned on in your sequencers sound device properties.

this might help?

This sounds almost right. It sounds like latency. Sorry if I'm being obvious with this suggestion. It got me for a while. As for using ASIO, make sure you use the ASIO DirectX Full Duplex Driver in Cubase. On my PC this gets me a latency of about 50ms, which is not bad. Whereas the ASIO Multimedia Driver results in a delay of around 800ms, which sounds like your case of around a second delay. This sounds ike the problem but if it ain't I dunno really what to suggest except buy a new soundcard. Those onboard ones are pretty pants.

Yeah it's certainly the way to go with serious (or not so serious like mine!) production work. I've just got a cheapo external one now but I'd like to get something decent down the line. Ah so much I want in the line of hardware!

HAving a good soundcard is the beginning of everything... You can't have a good sound and a good latency with a multimedia soundcard.

well does it depend on how good your sound card can produce that sound at that latency?

in what ways can people improve latency? as you said the sound card is only the begining of everything! r u best to have more hardware, is that what you mean?

The latency depends of the drivers you have for your sound card. But some drivers and sound cards have really better performance than others (I have a MOTU 828MKII). You can improve latency with the best last drivers developped for your sound card... ASIO 2.0 are the best.

For myself, software is good and except perhaps an Access Virus, I'm not interested in hardware anymore... even the JP-8000 (or 8080) has been used too many times and I'm sick of that kind of sound! Even if I have one...

VST RULES!!!!!
