Ableton for producing

The general reply I get when I answer Ableton Live to people who asks me what I currently use for producing is that they thought it was a software for making DJing/Livesets only.

I think its the most brilliant production environment since I saw Reason for the first time. Is there anyone else out there using Ableton Live for producing?

not that i had the time to learn it to its full extend but it's weird. different then the other sequensers. im going throu a phase now and im between cubase, ableton, floops and reason (which im gonna use as rewire anyway). i dont think ill be using cubase it doesnt really inspire me. im bored with fl and i think ill choose live + reason.

but anyway i need some time with it to learn its basics (at least) b4 i can decide.

are you using it as your main sequenser? how is it going with cpu in a full song with lots of vst's and stuff?

Yes I use it as the main sequencer (I dont even rewire it to anything, maybe Acid in the future).

And the cpu works well, the last track I finished, which was really stuffed with all sorts of vsts, I still couldnt top over 70%, and I had way more instruments than I usually have.

i create, loop, pattern, etc, all my sounds: drums, synths, whatever, in Fruity Loops 5 and Audio Mulch (so brilliant but such simple software), along with some other programs, but those are the two main ones. I work by just creating massive amounts of self made samples and loops and sequences, setting them all off in seperate folders, then i bang them into ableton and sequence them all. this process works the best for me and i often find myself doing alot more...improvisation things. it has a massive difference on my productibility and over all style. im not very sure how or why, but i know its something to do with the whole live process, i guess it gets my brain working more as with Live you have to be on the move the whole time while sequencing. its alot different from normal sequencers where you can see whats comming next. it tends to fuck with your whole perception on the track. i remeber sean booth from autechre talking about something similar to that, but he doesnt use Live...anyway im really side tracking now. 7:16am, havnt slept...you get the drift...

I'm alil like Twist

Were I create/compose all my loops mels etc in FL and then transfer it between programs. I'm still experimenting with Ableton along with others such as
Kristal ( Link : http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/ )

and

Tracktion v1.01 *which is the free full version ( Link : http://www.mackie.com/products/tracktion2/index.html )

But i'll look into ableton more closely because i could use the extra cpu handling.

Seb

What is it in FL you do that you cannot do in Live?

I for my part, could never work with exporting loops etc like that, I change everything all the time until its time to export the whole track. Rather do it all in realtime!

i just started working from the start with FL Studio and i perfer the piano roll, and basically, the other all feel and structure of the program. im just more comfortable with it than any other program. im not really sure to tell you the truth, the process just works perfectly for me!

EDIT: i dont use rewire with them either, i just do all the work seperatly, and move on when im satisfied, but only then.

Hmm i once downloaded the demo.

What really amazed me is the quality of the phasers, delay and reverb. Really good, Maybe even better than logic's

But what i am wondering in the new version, does it have an sequencer with a piano roll? i mean does it work like Reason now or is it still sample based?

I use Live for the core of my creative side of producing. It's much faster than Cubase to get my ideas down and just to experiment with sounds. Once the arrangement and main sounds are created on Live, I flatten the parts, and use Cubase for adding cohesive sounds, mixing and mastering.
