is it a bad thing to keep listening to ya own production ya busy on, or should there be ample rests so that u can go bak with fresh ears. i'm asking because sometimes i find it hard to move away from the computer when i'm onto something. what do you's do?

i try to get in 10 minute breaks every hour of work or so. it really helps me come back refreshed and ready to work again.

i find that if i work too long, i always convince myself to change things and my projects usually stray from what i had in mind in the first place.

i do sometimes get pulled in to a project to the point where i can't make myself take a break.

I thought this post was going to be about getting bored of your tracks because of listening to them too much.

Sometimes I take a a few days break from a track and work on a new one. It's not like you have to finish tracks fast.

many a times have I listened to one of my tracks way too much and got board of it and ended up changing it into something different...sometimes it works for the better. I find that listeing to other peoples tracks after listening to your own for awhile helps you rate the quality and know if your making crap or not.

I read in a infected mushroom interview that it takes them 2 to seven days to finish a track, so if you think about it, thetyre in the studio all day, working relentlessly on a track until its finished, and if its really good they keep it

What I do is I work as much as I can on a track, and if by half im not satisfied i throw it away.

Definately a bad thing, you need to keep your ears fresh so you can deduct what sounds bad from what is sounding good.

Regular breaks even listening to other genres of music might help (ive found it helps in my experience )

I'd say it's bad when you're creating new sounds. When you're incorporating some typical elements (and every trance track has those), and you're used to doing all the tweaking and EQ and everything machinally, there's really no point in taking breaks until the very end of your production.

i have made the same experiences while working on my tracks. especially during the arrangement process i get tired of hearing the same tracks on and on.

a 10 minute break after every hour of work is probably a good recommondation.

I was continuously working on a tune for a week & hadnt had many breaks, nor listened to other tunes to get a contrast. I stopped working on it & thought I had created a master piece. i started on something different, listened to a few new CDs & went back to this tune a couple of weeks later. To my surprise the impression I had of the track changed. The song was extremely flat & uninspiring. Im now up to Revision 6 or something.

Having breaks is a good thing, though if you are inspired & on a roll: dont stop until you drop. there's always tomorrow to compare the tune to others & commence the endless tweeking....

indeed..working on a track for too long can make you suffer from the "reference syndrome"
u wont even notice that ur fuckin up your sound quality cuz your ears/brain automaticly corrects it, so you sometimes need to listen to some other music for 10 mins or so before returning to work.

I either work on a new production or take a break, when i find i cant take a break im onto a good idea...

Mastering on the other hand should be left until you reste your ears, like goto sleep then listen to it after you have woken up, elements sound different after this...
