It's probably a problem with your sound drivers/sound card. Download the asio4all ASIO drivers and set ableton to use this driver set (you can change this in the audio options). After that, go into the asio4all setup and increase the buffer setting. This worked wonders for me, as I had the same problem. Increasing the buffer settings a lot will also increase your latency, so when you're using MIDI, you'll notice a delay between when you hit a key and when it registers in ableton (this can be fixed by turning the buffer size back down).
