just want some general tips on house kicks and percs

any tips would be nice as I've been producing trance for years and just gettinginto house now...so basically I'm just looking for some tips on kicks and stuff...like compression ect..I would say that house tracks have deeper kicks.

Any tips would be great.

House Kicks

Yeah I too would like to know a little more about house kicks/bass drums in general. I have read that the standard 909 is used primarily in house however I think what i was reading was a bit out of date because a lot of the electro house that I have been listening too by say Mylo "no more conversations" and "lift me up" and stuff by Steve Angello Eric Prydz all seem to have a deeper kick with an almost acoustic sound too them while still sounding very electronic. Anybody know what im talking about? Can anybody us in the right direction?

The two most important things you need to know about percussion in house music is:

1. It swings. You'll never get authentic-sounding house music without at least a little swing in the drums (most often the hats) - without it, you've just got prog.

2. The most important element is the bassline, not the kick. In trance you can get away with a punchy kick and some higher-pitched jittery bass; house music is not house music without a deep, solid bassline.

So use a swing or a good groove template in your drum editor, and work on your basslines - forget about the kick, because there's no rule for that in house.

Yeah..

Im not struggling with hats or basslines Basslines I have started to find quite easy with a bit of layering etc. However I still havent quite reached the timbre in kick that im after... 909's are so close yet not quite there. It seems that most of the house music has such a similar kick sound its not funny, this isnt necessarily a good thing but dammit i wanna know what there doing
