Interesting question about Ableton Live...

So, one of my buddies just produced a track and he gave me a sample of the submix (before vocals and all, etc). Towards the end of his tune, he has a breakbeat section and he says he used Ableton Live to do all the warping of the beats.

I am wondering if anyone has had any warping success of this calibur? I think the beat is hot as hell, but I can't wrap my own head around how to do it in Ableton. I've messed with warp markers for about a month now just using drum loops trying to get the same effects. ANY ideas? Here's the clip:

Use the envelope for impluse called "global time"
This is even in the ableton tutorials. Atleast ableton 4 tutorials.

Here is a crappy short sample of a 1 bar loop and with beatrepeat and global time envelope.

Thanks a lot Akazi. I've been messing with beat repeat a lot. In one of my tracks I used it during one of the vocal sections to get that sick stutter and pitch-decay effect. I'm trying to get a grip on it more tightly though, along with using warp markers in odd ways to mash the beats...that way I can manipulate more freely.

I'm trying to learn more about the global time envelope. I did a search in the Live 5 manual...found a little bit of info but not much. I will keep looking though.

btw the sheer fact you made a demo recording is awesome..kudos to you and thank you for being so helpful!

DJ Tommy, do you have any recommendations as far as guidelines when trying to decide what breaks/loops to warp the hell out of like these? Like should you leaves space so that you can fill it with the warping/stutters? I'm really trying to go for a similar sound as the beat I posted, and my buddy simply told me he used warp markers. I'm t rying to figure out what the actual beat is he is warping, haha. :P

It's a killer beat though man. Both of them, yours and his.

If he just used warp markers, it sounds like he did some sort of granular stretchin, in an effort to emulate the time-stretching algorithms of old school samplers. It creates something of a stuttering effect. Go for the "texture" stretching method in the drop-down there.

Sweet...this is all helping me get more familiar. I think that it helps to know what you want to hear in the end. I think the beat he's warping is actually just the drum track from earlier in his track (I won't post the whole thing).

Also, he's doing something to make it sound like it's all on a tape machine and it slows down/speeds up. Is there a simple way to do that in Ableton? Or should I just program it all in with various effects like pitch-shift, formant shifters, etc?
