But honestly, you'll get different answers for different genres. Like I can say happy is synonymous with euphoric. Some people will disagree with me. Just make music that you think sounds good.

uplifting, euphoric and epic are actually the same genre. it is easier to classify tracks in such genre when there's enough intensity throughout the whole song (esp. the breakdown) to keep the listeners in a state of high. And it's usually associated with the presence of a massive supersaw lead.

as for melodic trance, it emphasizes more on the texture of the main melody. if you would notice, some tracks' melody are dull while some are nice to listen to.

happy trance, in my opinion, it is generally much simpler than the 2 above. it also emphasizes on the melody too but in a way it sounds "happy" when you listen to it. yanno, some tunes they have those dark melody (usually in lower keys) and for happy trance, they're in higher octaves. i'd say their beats aren't as sophisticated as uplifting tracks (generally ).

psy trance and goa are almost the same (or maybe they're both the same, i don't know...). it usually have a simple melody and a acid lead. however, they are richer in percussions usage and in higher bpm than any other trance genres (except for hardcore trance). if you're lucky, you might hear some sounds that are India'ish since it's said that the genre is originated from that country.

progressive trance on the other hand is much more popular and almost every dj is playing it. it has a more constant flow in terms of the mood of the song. does not have huge breakdowns like uplifting trance.
i'd say bass plays a major role in this genre.
