How can i create this effect? (sample included)

Im no expert when it comes to designing my own sounds, and ive had a few attempts at the included effect but not having much luck.

Im guessing a saw wave is used, fade in on the LFO with filter, it gradually pitches up, and some fast vibrato towards the end at 24 seconds. I think another effect is then layered into this one, but im not sure. There is quite a lot going on.Maybe automation is the key here, but i cant even get the same timbre!?

Any advice on how i can acheive this would be very much appreciated. I've been trying with the Virus TI, and im quite sur it is quite capable, but im also open to advice on any soft synths.

Here are two mirrored links....

Thanks again!

Nice tune..Yea, In Cubase, I'de take a recording of a note being held down bring the pitch up then apply whichever filters sound right and automate the effects.

Thats the idea you just need to play around with it i suppose.

Put it this way, I wanted a similar sound so found a recording of a drill head spinning and incresed the pitch over time, then added effects, it sounded PHAT, the drill head seemed to contain loads of "voices" so it sounded amazing.

I'll post it later for a laugh

yea you can automate the pitch bend, just adjust its settings to cover 24 seminotes or something, and in the end there's an LFO going crazy, modulating the main pitch.

There's a lot going on in there. You've got a bitcrusher in the beginning, then an FM LFO with automated frequency, then something else happens that I can't quite place. Maybe the LFO passes into range of audible pitch, but it sounds too high.

That's just the sounds that I can pick out, there's so much more going on here it's not even funny.

- Bitcrusher at the beginning
- Filter with an env follower and probably a key trigger in the middle
- Delay/reverb near the end
- Basic stutter at the very end
- Pitchbend/chromatic scale all the way through

If you dont mind, could you explain this part in a bit more detail.

Would envelope follower be the same as key follow, which can be found in the filter settings on the virus?

Also what is key trigger, and what do you think it is doing in this sample.

Thanks.

Key trigger would be more or less the same thing as key follow, but env follow is different.

Literally speaking an envelope follower is a type of electronic circuit that generates a control signal from the envelope of an input signal (generally the amplitude envelope). It follows slowly though, so you don't actually get a copy of the input signal, just a rough outline of the variations in its amplitude.

In an envelope-following filter, you're using an envelope follower on the input signal to automate a filter parameter, usually the cutoff. That's as opposed to automating with a manual control like a foot pedal. You can get some interesting effects this way depending on your input, and people often use it with a foot pedal or key trigger hooked up to the other parameter (i.e. follower on resonance, pedal on cutoff). The most common use is the "auto-wah", and you can hear a bit of that in this sample along with what I would imagine is a MIDI-note-controlled automation layered on top (key trigger/follower).

Tonic and Classic AutoFilter both have this effect (Tonic comes with Cubase, AutoFilter is a free plugin from Kjaerhus).

If you're an ableton user, this is the sort of thing you can do when you get clever with Sampler.

As others have mentioned though there's a shitload going on to create this sound, it's hard to really pick apart the individual things.
