Question Making a remix pack of my song available?

Hey guys/gals,

Avonlea and I just finished up a vocal trance tune that is probably too old-school to get signed, so we're thinking about making a remix pack available for anybody interested in remixing it. I know a lot of you get involved in remix competitions, etc., so I'm just looking for some general guidance. My plan to was to put a remix pack including the vocal .wav tracks, MIDI files of the main instruments (e.g., bass, leads, pads), and general track info (e.g., original tempo, key) on my server for download and announce it on a few EDM forums.

I'm not looking for this to be a "competition" per se, just an exhibition of people's talents and interpretations. But, people will obviously be free to post their version on forums for feedback. I see a lot of posts and get PMs/emails from a lot people looking for vocal tracks to remix, so this is our small way of trying to help out there.

But, I'll also admit that this is as much for self-promotion as it is for hearing other people's interpretation of the song, so I want to be sure that people credit it appropriately. Any concerns there, or are most people pretty good about that sort of thing in your experience?

My plan is to have everyone send me a copy of their final version and I'll host them on my server and make a dedicated mp3 player available for all the versions.

How does this sound? Any other other considerations, pitfalls, etc. that I may be overlooking? Thanks!

I'll get the remix pack together over the next few days. In the meantime, you can hear the original song at:

But, please note that I'm NOT looking for comments on the song in this thread, so please keep this thread on topic. Thanks!

It would be my pleasure, i've learned a lot from your posts here, and i would really love to bring some vocals to my currently extremely techy productions. Or i may just go back to my uplifting discover style roots with it. Anyway thanks in advance for the opportunity!

I'm interested. I don't get to work with vocals too often. I'm a prog head, so it would be a proggy house or trance remix. I think you should take the 4 best remixes and get them signed. Olympik records might be interested, hit Stephen up. Let any money made go to charity.

Generally, people will give due credit - that is, using the original artist and song name, then a (producer's name remix) after it. I think that anyone who has invested enough time into improving their skills will want to stand on their own merits, and is happy to see other people succeed as well. It's more likely the lesser skilled producers who see production as a competition, who get jealous of other artists, who think "there's only room for a handful of people at the top", who would try to pass someone else's work off as their own, to try to deal with their own inferiority complex. The results might be better than what they usually create, but they're still not going to be of a quality you'd need to be concerned about. If you're providing just MIDI versions of the instruments (this is my preference for remix packs - too many remixes use too many elements of the original mix, and you get a bunch of mixes which all sound largely the same), then people will have to have great production skills to create a great sounding song.

In any case, if someone does claim it as their own work, you'll have plenty of people who can verify when they downloaded your remix pack. There'll be compelling evidence that your song was put out into the public space before the copyright-infringing song came out. The evidence on the infringer's side would have to be as strong - that they could clearly demonstrate that you were able to access/steal their song from them before you put it onto the internet. I can't see how they could manufacture strong evidence of that.

That's some good thinking! I'll shoot Stephen a PM.

@derail - thanks for the insight - that's very useful! I agree that MIDI files are the way to go for the instruments.
