is rewire a bad thing to use with cubase

hey i spoke to this professional producer from the uk and he was telling me that its so much better to use cubase for everything rather than use rewire to rewire redrum he was like youd be better off using a vst like battery or the drum synth lm7 in cubase does anyone else feel this way that there are other better options than redrum rewired through cubase (i know there are better options out there ,but he was making the a rgument that reason is not the best sound quality)

so let me know on this. and if there is anyone who does use battery with cubase id like to hear about it.

Well Steinberg co-developed Rewire so I don't see why, unless your computer is ancient.

I have tried rewiring to Reason, FL Studio, Ableton Live.. it works ok.. but id rather do everything inside the program, more convenient in the long run.
The newer versions of Cubase has the ability to record straight from the rewired channel which seems very neat.

i havent really tried much but i dont like to work through rewire. its not super-intuitive imo. what i could use it for is if i made a track in reason (which i often do) and im not happy with the mixdown (which im often not) i could rewire each channel into logic or cubase and do the mixdown over again there with some better plugs etc. very time demanding and impossible to backup etc though... i almost rather export the elements as wav-loops. im doing this anyway for future live purposes so.

This is why Ableton is so nice.. you can export each of the individual channels with one click.

That pro producer from UK is talking out of his ass. Rewiring Reason into cubase will bypass the reason's mixer only. It allows for the ease of using redrum with excellent sound quality & use of external effects along with it, as well as the reason effects suite. The best thing is to use Dr.Rex. I find it way better than stylus rmx, given that you have alot of loops.

If the guy is saying lm7 is better than redrum or dr.rex, then he really doesn't know what he's talking bout. The sound quality in Reason is fine. The money is in building your own synths. Use the combinator as much as possible to build super synths. You can have as many oscillators, effects, eq's as your heart desires. The more time you spend building a proper synth, the better the outcome. That's what Reason is about. It's not for lazy people just wanting to tweak a few knobs here and there. You need to understand routing and basic synth functions.

The best thing about Reason is it never crashes, you can save combi patches, fast workflow, very low cpu usage, excellent results. Only someone greedy would want more and more. What else do you want?

The only thing I would recommend is a host for the rewire. Samplitude works really well. Some effects plugins would also be of use. And last but not least, some good refills. The more sounds you have to play with in your soundbank, the better. I just don't like any piano roll without the right-click erase sweep function. Which is why I use samplitude's piano roll to draw notes.

Reason is a great application, and intelligently designed. That's not something I can say for the majority of stuff out there by other companies.

I have battery 3. It's a good drum module. It does more than what redrum can do and can load rex files as well. If you don't use Reason for any synth building, then just get battery 3. But if you use Reason's synths alot, then stick to Redrum and Dr.Rex. I personally started to use Dr.Rex quite alot. I find it really fun to use and it's an answer to my prayer for drum sounds.

The lm7 is a joke, it was introduced in Cubase VST 5 almost a decade ago.

Also worth noting, Cubase does takes Rex files just fine.

I use Battery with Cubase and highly recommend it. As for using rewire, I don't see it as a problem. I use Ableton via rewire as a slave all the time and have come to rely upon it so much that I now write the main track in Cubase and a 2nd supporting track in Ableton. Use whatever works best for you.

I use Reason at the start of projects to audition drum sounds. Then I load the sounds into Cubase tracks and work with them there.

Regarding the original post, the samples sound different to me, loaded into Cubase tracks than playing through the ReDrum rewired into Cubase.

The main thing is convenience though - once I've picked my drum samples, I load them into Cubase and work with them there (since working with audio is so easy in Cubase), and it means I don't need to open up Reason when I open up the Cubase project again.

I do the same with sounds I bring in from Ableton Live - render to audio, so I don't have to open up Live again (unless I want to change something).

I'm looking forward to Battery.

this is what this well established producer said

thanks guys for your responses ill give battery a try lm7 looks ancient and also consider making my loops in redrum then bouncing to audio

anyhow this is what the guy said after i sent him a sample

Okkkkk I think I've hit on the 1st key thing... are you rewiring reason thru cubase? If so, best bit of advice I could give you (harsh as it may seem) is to ditch reason for now, and learn to master cubase by itself... once u get into it, it's so much more intuitive and gives u total freedom over sound.
