Start with some loops you like then try to re-create them. Especially useful if you can find some loops as .rex files then you can mess with the loop arrangement yourself. Although I haven't used Rex files for years, there is probably something new now

In all seriousness: Trying to recreate loops is a good idea. If you get them as mp3 or wav, you can process them through any audio editor to slow it down. I know that I have a problem with recreating patterns when they are played at full speed, I can't seem to be able to discern the different hats because it goes too fast. That's why I open them in Soundforge, slow it down a bunch, and kill the low frequencies. Works for me.
