Are OEM software distributors legit? Like Kukasoft?

I made a thread about this a couple years ago and went to search for it and can not find it.
I don't remember the type of feedback I got but I think for the most part people were bad mouthing these distributors. I don't remember what the reason was though which is why I'm making this thread again lol.

I bought sylenth finally and love the freaking thing, really an awesome synth and for the price definitely worth it. It also works great on FL which I was worried about. But then I started looking into omnisphere. I only wanted sylenth initially but I figured I have the money so might as well get something else to hold me over for the summer.

Omnisphere sells for $479 roughly but on this OEM site it sells for $69 for the 6dvds. I read on the site that all software is new/legitimate and from the manufacturer. But the reason its so cheap is it doesn't come with manuals/cds or all the regular things you get when you buy boxed versions.
However, it still doesn't make sense. Boxed versions are usually more expensive yes but downloadable versions are usually just a bit cheaper. From $479 to $69 doesn't seem right, it almost seems like they're doing something illegal. But I can't figure out what they're doing because they look totally legit. And I couldn't find any reviews on the site so I ask here.

Heres the link:
http://kukasoft.com/software_descri...ics_Omnisphere_(6_dvds)_soft.html

Kukasoft is the website. Theres no point paying $479 if this site turns out legit because $69 is absurdly cheap. But I feel like I'm missing something or not reading in between the lines and I don't know what the deal is.

Should I try ordering it or what?
Thanks gents.

i thought OEM was yearly payment to assure "free" upgrades "forever"? im totally not sure about that though, and i might even mix it with a different term.

oem stands for originall equipment manufacturer. It's software meant for companies that use the oemsoftware for distribution with other products. A computer coming with windows pre-installed is oem. Oem product may never be sold seperately. Thus, technically buying oem versions as a consumer is illegal.

Ahh ok I got it now thank you!
Basically like when I got my novation synth they shipped a cd with v-station on it and some other free software. Now that I think about it I think I have a free version of Ableton sitting around here lol.

It seems like what he's doing is illegal, but I remember the site being there years and years ago so they must be doing something to circumvent the laws. Otherwise I'd imagine someone would have shut them down. I noticed a few other companies doing the same thing so maybe law enforcement just turns a blind eye.

I'm going to wait a few more hours to see if I get any more feedback but all I care about is getting legit software that I can register. If ordering it is technically illegal I don't really care, and seeing as though the company has been around for a while I doubt they're ripping people off.

It sucks though cause I could have got sylenth for $10 from this place, they have Trilogy for $30, and Omnisphere for $70 is ridiculous. I can't imagine what other synths they have. And I notice they have sample packs too so I may wind up spending a lot here. In all due respect to cryo these makes even his deals look like a rip off lol. If all turns out well I'll update here encase anyone else wants to use them.

They're probably from Russia or China. I'm betting this source is illegal either way. These price differences can hardly be real.

+ a simple check reveals the website indeed operates from russia. Another one that sets off an alarm, no contact information other than support on the website. Plus their refund policy says you're not entitled to a refund if 'you can't get manufacturer updates for some reason'.

If this is the way you want to go you'll be ripped off as much as spectrasonics.

It does depend on the individual product's licence terms, but yes 99% of the time selling OEM products without authorised hardware is illegal.

Websites who sell PC parts will often allow you to buy OEM products without buying a new PC, as they dodge the issue by claiming that it's "highly likely" you've bought a PC or the parts to build one through the same company recently and hence the OEM product is an extension of that sale, but technically they're supposed to check that's the case.

In any case, it's fairly common practice for companies in countries with less strict copyright laws sell pirated software and mark it as 'OEM' to try and convince people that it's a legal copy, despite the low price. Which I expect is what's happening here... the explanation in their FAQs of why their software is so cheap is:
quote:
Look around, it's normal for OEM software to be cheap.

Jesus Christ Robbie, a site is selling a product that retails for 479 dollars yet they are selling it for 69 dollars. Hmmm, this is a tough one. After all, they call it OEM so it must be legit right?

Stop trying to convince yourself it might be legal when it blatantly can't be.

If you're going to buy these, you may as well pirate them. In either case, I very much doubt the money will go to the company which created the software.
