Monitor headphones, <$200, closed back?

After years of heavy use my AKG K240s have finally succumbed to wear and tear. Ideally I would like to get some closed back phones this time around, which rules out just buying another pair of the same. $200 is my rough price limit.

Any suggestions?

I have already done some looking myself, but I wanted to see what you all had to say.

Those seem to be quite well-regarded in the reading I've done.

Sennheiser HD280Pros? I have 2 pair that I use for tracking, and occasionally check mixes on them, but I don't know that I would trust them as my main mixing cans (or any closed-back cans, for that matter) because they have a tendency to hype certain low/low-mid frequencies. They have a lot more thickness in the midrange compared to my main mixing headphones (BD DT880s).

JBJ, I'm in the same boat. The trusty old K240S are falling apart

I really like AKG though so I want to stick with them but not sure if I should go closed back. Seems a bit overkill. Why are you going for closed? I'm actually thinking of going full open with the K702, the only thing I'm worried about is too much sound leakage late at night.

My living situation does not allow for listening to open or semi-open at full volume (I share an office with my girlfriend).

i heard these recently, they sound nicely but i think they lie to you like a dog, pretty much anything sounds good in them, and thats the problem - you need something thats going to point out flaws not mask them.

for closed backs i hear the AKG K271 (claimed the closed back equivalent of K240s) does the job quite well. also im hearing really good things about the KRK KNS8400 headphones which i blindly recommended to some a few buddies and they are thanking me with their lives and have heard all of their mixdowns improve tremendously. + cant argue with memory foam cushions

I've got some K271s and while I think they're pretty decent, they may as well be open backs for the amount of sound they let out.

i have a few 171s but i think they are made for girls as they are small and tend to fit female ears.
