Mixing Problem

I mixed down my track in headphones, then switched over to monitors for the final mixdown.

However, the vocals in this track are the problem. If I set them at the right level on the monitors, they sound WAY too loud in headphones. And if I balance them in the mix in headphones, they get overpowered when played on a bigger system.

What might be the issue?

Thanks.

would try mixing in mono in your cans and your monitors just to test things as the stereo image differences between cans / monitors can be pretty huge.

Also try playing a vocal track on both and see how they relate so you can narrow whether it is just your headphones or it is your mixing.

2 min clip in my sig "Low Tide"

L4C, I've done the mono on both, but still there's a significant difference in what level sounds right on each. I'll try that out, matching the level to a different vocal track. Thanks.

So which vocal part is in the question - and also which mixing we are listening right now - headphones or speakers?

All the vocal samples in the track. That's the headphone adjustment for the vocals.

So I'm on my crappy headphones and this vocal right from the beginning sound a bit to low for me but this at the end sounded at right level - nice warm and summery bits you have going on lol.

Will rune it again on my home speakers this afternoon.

Cheers

Yeah, now I switched to "in the ear" small phones (which cuts some low end) and this vocal at the beginning sound right now but at the end definitely loud (may be to laud for my taste).

Don't know your setup at all and how your vocal seats in your track so will be really hard to give you any constrictive idea but looks like (on your speakers) low end is overpowering it.

Try to do this, render this 2 min part without vocal and then open new project insert it back (your render part) and add your vocal channel only, I would like to know if you will still have the same problem.

But in the mean time somebody may have more professional idea/concept on what the problem could be.

Cheers,

Darek

Since your cans and monitors are going to have different frequency responses, the perceived loudness difference seems like it may be an EQ problem. Is there a certain frequency range / area that the vocals are peaking in? You need to find other references sources like a car stereo, laptop or earbuds, and go from there, to isolate the issue.

Yep still happening, it's like the vocals are "sitting in a hole"

The meat of the vox sit at about 1-4k, with lower freqs down to about 300 to round it out. There are no "extreme" peaks as far as I can tell. I've checked it on car speakers and laptop speakers as well. All sounds good, except when I play it on monitors or club system and the vox just don't cut through as I expect them to.

Interesting????

Do you have any treatments on Master, FX, EQ, ect?????

Tough b***ch lol - you may have to compensate a bit on master this particular Freq with some degree of balance and only some serious/professional mastering guys could do it the right way, but what do I know lol - not too much of vocal experience on production site

Will let you know if I come up with something else!

Cheers,

Darek

I do have a mastering compressor and EQ on the master, which I'm using as my own master until I get it professionally done.
