The pads are detuned (in the negative I think?). Sounds like a square wave mixed in with some noise.

Hard to put my finger on it. sounds like a series of saws, high octave, in something like Gladiator, to get that bright un-grimey flavor of the saws when its all the way open. Glad you ask though because this track is fucking beautiful.

It is. I've heard this pad / synth in a couple of tracks and I really love it.
