How to Buy / Properly use an SSD

SO I really need faster read times.... i have max ram for this machine but plaback is still choppy on some heavy tracks and i need 15-25% increase in speed. will i get this with an SSD?

also there seems to be a huge range for the same size.. what should i look for?

When using an SSd is it best to have project files only on the FW800 drive and then only programs and basic docs on the SSD?

Unfortunately my macbook pro doesn't have thunderbolt but I have fw800 drives

get rid of the superdrive and put an hdd caddy with a second ssd or your older hd in there. 20$. priceless in terms of satisfaction.

not really gonna make a difference unless you are using say 20 tracks of continuous 24 bit 96 khz audio. If it is just samples, the OS will benifit more from the SSD, then the recording drive. Most of it will be put into ram for playback.

EDM just doesn't use enough audio files to warrant an SSD but you might as well since it is so cheap.

YES.

Intel 5 series or Samsung 8 series. Everything else just doesn't have the same combo of reliability and speed.

I own a Intel 520 256gb on this laptop, and put a Samsung 830 256gb in my Imac.

Honesty, do not go for any other brands - this is in the grand scheme of things, new technology and the other brands just haven't got it right yet, and sammy and intel just keep getting better.

Always select "copy audio files to working project folder" in your daw and have that folder on the SSD. When you're done with a project migrate the folder to an external FW drive.

This way, you always get the speed benefits of the SSD and can have masiv cheap storage in secondary/external drives. I saw a huge (beyond the sum of part itself) increase in overall performance, including decreases in CPU usage.

If you are buying secondary drives always make sure they are at least 7200 RPM, if not the velociraptors at 10,000rpm, which will help cut down sample audition times.

I have my most commonly used romplers (omnisphere etc) on my OS drive as the latency jumping between presets is non existent, whereas on an external they can be up to 4/5 seconds.

Great advice all. thank you!

I will probably have to change my workflow a bit ...

my current project is about 120 GB over about 40-50 songs so I think its prob best if i keep that on an external 7200rpm + and drag over each indivivual project when im working on it?

looks like i need a 400gb + drive
