WTF is this? People that matter don't care whether you're using presets or not (hint - they don't even know what a preset is), people that care don't matter.

and these kids be listening to your music, and don't know that, i constantly get messages about what preset pack or whatever I'm using , and it bothers me . I am tired of reiterating myself lol
like when you hear showtek, you know thats showtek , theres no pack you can download on loopmasters unless somebody tries to recreate their thing and release it as a novelty thing
well i want people to know when you hear lovehate, thats lovehate! |
I'm lol so what (to some extend of course) - for me this is not about sound creation contest but music creation process/art.

I could care less if someone uses a preset.
If anything, I love it when I hear a good track and the relaize the creative way they have made that preset fit in to the track.
Anyone who criticizes using a preset is usually a amateur producer who knows just enough to be dangerous.
It's like setting up a digital desk every single time you got to do a mix down. Aside from the repeat to learn aspect, once you know it, there's no point spending the time setting up the desk again, when you can just recall the setup as a preset.
Same with patches. It's bullshit purist idealism to beleive you have to hand craft every patch you use. What's the fucking point if someone has already done it for you?
I'm actually trying to make a remix of a big 1998 track right now only using presets. It's a lot of fun....

I make my own synth patches most of the time and, guess what? They usually end up sounding like...uhhh.....well,...presets.
The problem here is the whole myth of "originality" in EDM. First, most electronic music these days is not very original or groundbreaking - it's just as formulaic (if not more so) than just about any other genre. Second, how many times have heard people say that you're cheating if you're not making your own presets or using loops. Then, you go listen to all those people's music and, sure enough, their oh-so-original-sounds that they are making or using sound just like all those unoriginal loops and presets. Yay for originality.
Sure, there's pride in creating your own sounds and often times it's a lot more efficient to make something yourself than it is to pore through a million loops or presets hoping to find what you're looking for. But, you can't expect people to take as much pride in your work as you do.
But, I see the OP's point. He spends a lot of time on making his own sounds, has pride in it, but people hear it and just assume that he's using presets because: (a) they probably don't make music themselves and just assume that the computer does most of the work (sometimes not far from the truth), or (b) they do know that he made his own music but assume that he used presets because the sounds that he made for his music sound like...uhhh.....well,...presets.
