Question about some standard drumbeats

I've heard alot of breakbeat music and other electronica, but I can't seem to emulate a decent drumbeat of those genres. Somehow i veer into the kick-hat-kick-hat trance standard, but that's because I'm addicted . Help me out. I'm trying to get something like what prodigy uses, or Crystal Method.

try moving the kick around. ex:

k= kick drum
c= clap (or snare)
_= nothing

1........2........3........4........1........2........3........4........

k........c........_...k....c........k........c........_...k....c........

and then throw in a hihat like you would in a regular 4/4 beat.
