I'm new in trance-making music scene.
I would like to hear what you say about the YAMAHA RS7000. I'm about to buy this machine so please give me your opinion.
Also, what kind of hardware do I have to buy for the begining?

the rs7000 looks pretty sweet...i was thinking about picking one up to replace my ASR-X but when i saw the new MC 909 i changed my mind just my 2 cents but the rs7000 maxes at 64 megs of sample ram the mc909 is at 272 big difference...also the usb support on the 909just sounds sweet...they are about the same price... I am also waiting to see what the EMU / Ensoniq guys release to replace the ASR-X and bring it up to the current market...

On the production tip you should be able to fully produce tracks on these devices...creative sampling re/sampling is the key here...I produced solely on my ASR-X for years until it up and died...but a sampling workstation is prolly the best single device (ASIDE OF A COMPUTER) that i can recomend to start with...

I have an mc 505 and I really don't like the sequencing but 909 has bigger screen (lcd) --> piano roll? so maybe its better. My friend has an rm1x which is basicly a smaller rs 7000 without internal sampling. He definately likes the sequencing.. it's like having cubase in a box.. you can do lineair sequencing too. It can't be bad if justin berkovi takes it with him for a live set. Soundmodule of my 505 are far better then rm1x and more in depth too but don't expect too much of it.. don't want it to sound like a (virtual) analogue synth (like an1x , micro q , jp 8000 , virus , nova , ....)

Also mc 505 has some really bad (i mean BAD) midi functions : midi tx and rx assigns are not per pattern but are a system setting so you godda use on each track the same synth on the midi channel or change it every time. Any chance roland ?? if you're planning to buy 909 ask about it

BTW don't mind the ram 64 meg is more then enough unless you want to give a classical concert with 200 virtual musicians.
A beat takes a few kb,
a large classical instrument multisample maybe 2 meg?

Erm,

The rs 7000 is basicly an expanded rm1x with some new stuff like sampling (which is cool since you are not restricted to the onboard samples). Sequencing is really GOOD ! Sounds are also better than the rm1x (i've played one in my local music store) and it can compare to the roland grooveboxes in terms of sound (just don't expect too much from it, you won't create killer patches untill you buy some va synths) and you have an extra efx block (can't have enough of these). There's nothing more to tell you, just go to your local shop and ask a demo.. take the one that sounds best for you.

I've started with an mc505 and will now switch to software sequencing because things become to complicated to sequence on a groovebox. I got to say I've learnd a LOT of it (sequencing + synthesis) and you will too. You will also learn how to sequence just on hardware and that is an advantage because you will be able to do a decent live. (how many laptops have filter/resonance/adsr/... knobs?) Later on, when you have to control a few synths, it'll be a lot easier to work on in cubase or logic and when you have to go outside you just sequence things in your groovebox, you don't have to take all that garbage with you. Just forget about the fruitycrap unless you want to sound like any other wanna-be begging you review their songs that you don't dare to review..

To promote myself ERM... the groovebox a little, here are 2 songs fully sequenced with the mc 505

Bear in mind there's 3 year of experience paired with those songs, you won't sequence this from day 1

Funny thing is that people now spend loads of money to buy hardware to control their software running from their laptop/pc to do a live Is it just me or is this whole world going crazy

so from what I understand I shall buy the mc505 and use it instad of buying some cheap-but-good midi and use it with the pc?

I didn't say you have to buy the mc505, I shared you my personal experience with it. I just think the better grooveboxes in general are serious tools and a very good all-in-one starting point if you're new to the scene. If you can stretch your budget go for an rs7000/mc909 if you can't buy an rm1x/mc505 (2nd hand). The choise to go yamaha/roland is a subjective matter and you should go to your local shop to see which one you like best. Ask them all your questions, these guys are paid for it .
