A lot don't work or don't work very well in Windows XP, even after setting that useless "run under windows 2000" and whatnot modes.
Any suggestions such as a shell program to run them from or even better would be a program I can install that will increase their playability.

Funny that you made a post regarding this when my last post had to do with DOS games (look in the D3 topic).
Unfortunately, I can't help you when it comes to the solution since I've been searching for it, as well. The DOSgamesarchive site should have some advice on the running of those games in XP.

What you need is Dosbox, like MikHail said. But also, get the frontend D-Fend V2. Makes everything so much easier. Runs all DOS games, no matter how old, perfectly.

Doxbox works very well and thanks I'll try that program out. Looks as if the creator is a tranceaddict as well

Dosbox, as far as I can remember will only run the more basic DOS games at a playable speed. Anything designed for computers faster than a 386 will be incredibly slow. I have managed to run a couple of more advanced DOS games by booting Connectix Virtual PC into DOS, although that may all be too complex to explain.
