I've been debating picking it up, but haven't really even gotten that deep into how the actual gameplay works.

Little more firsthand info, Sam?

Picked it up this weekend, even after reading TONS of horror stories about the DRM and dissapointing gameplay. Currently, I am playin it offline only, (since I just moved and Time Warner can't get their asses out till the 20th) so I can't yet comment on exploring other user created content.

So far I've been likin' it. The graphics are vibrant, colorful, and give a coherent style to the universe. There are no shortage of visual details that tie in very well to where you have been and where you are going. (i.e. seeing HUGE creatures floating in the background behind you as a cell, or seeing tiny herds of creatures wandering through the forest as you are colonizing the planet.) The creation tools for creatures, buildings, and vehicles are amazing; I've enjoyed hours just working in the editors. The gameplay itself is lighthearted, fun, and simple. Each respective part of the game is very intuitive, and will only take minutes to learn.

Going through from start to finish the first time is pretty amazing. The whole "whoa" factor of progressing from a single cell to a universe-traversing society is really neat.

The complaints that I can relate to, are those saying that the game can be a bit too forgiving at times. The 'evolution' aspect seems to be really dumbed down. For example, you create a creature with one feature on a certain part of the body. Dont like it? No biggie! Just mate again and you are presented with a totally open ended editor. With each generation, there are NO rules saying that ANY feature from the previous generation has to be retained. You can edit and create ENTIRELY new creatures from generation to generation; which really takes the evolutionary magic out of the equation, and turning it more into a biologic sandbox. It would have been great if you were made to live with the choices you make in the editor for more that at least ONE generation. Another issue is that some of the games modes are a little too simple, and the first 4 seem to be made to rush through to get to the final space stage.

Overall, I think it is suffering from the immense hype. The game is simple, sure, but I've been having a great time clicking through. It doesn't require a lot of thought, it has GREAT creative freedom, and its an entertaining world to play around in. If you were looking for something more complex and challenging, you will be dissapointed. Again, I've only been playing it for a few days; these are just my initial responses.

Thanks for the thought out post m8.

In other news... http://www.antispore.com

A blatant stab at the anti-evolutionist dickheads boycotting/ranting about Spore, and one of the more hilarious viral marketing tools I've seen...

quote:

Understand my beliefs

But the Bible teaches us that God was not done with man. For we were His creation and He then spoke to Noah in Genesis 8:21-27 after the flood. “21. The LORD smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from childhood. And never gonna give you up. 22. “Never gonna let you down.” 23.”Never gonna run around and desert you.” 24. “Never gonna make you cry.” 25. “Never gonna say goodbye.” 26. “Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you.” 27.”Never truly believe anything you read on the Internet. There will always be cases of Poe’s Law.”

I also thought this bit was funny:

quote:
Poes Law
"Without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humor, it is impossible to create a parody of Fundamentalism that SOMEONE won't mistake for the real thing"

Sadly this is not getting that great reviews from gamers as was expected.

While the journo reviews put it at like 9/10, the general rating from people actually playing the game for a decent amount of time is about 7/10.

Seems like a fun game but can get old quick and it's much more limited than was first thought. I'm going to wait until it goes down in price majorly.

I'm more excited about Sims 3

Sorry Rob

To be honest I haven't even gotten to the tribal phase yet, but my favorite part is the cell! The post above mine pretty much sums it up for me minus the complaint about evolution.

And yes, that video is from 2005, and is exactly what the game is like.

LOL! @ the crazy people

I played it in one sitting to the space age. It's an ok game. Not like I was thinking about. I found it disappointing that how you design your creature, cell, buildings, etc, doesn't actually have an effect on how well they perform. The only thing that matters is the type of mouth and feet and legs and stuff, but the effect is the same if its on the creature's ass or on a normal place.

Space age is annoying. It's hard and confusing.

edit: It's more of a toy than a game.
