Camera buying advice wanted

My Canon SD 300 camera was dropped at a club last night. The lens will no longer zoom out. I am only sometimes able to take pictures and not even the whole availbe shot is taken and there is something rattling inside. Basically, it broke and I need a new one.

I was really happy with my camera.
Can anyone give me any suggestions on choosing a new digital camera?
How many megapixels do I really need?
Would you suggest sticking to canon's SD line?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The Fuji Finepix F30 (6.3 megapixel) is good pocket-size camera for low-light settings such as nightclubs, but it's a little thicker than the Canon SD series. It can take pics up to as high as ISO 3200, and has a lot of manual settings or can just be put on auto as well.

I took some pics in the daytime with my F30 and was kinda disappointed though. Everything looked flat, not much depth, shadow detail, etc. The colors didn't seem as crisp as with my SD300 either. Maybe I just need to experiment more with the F30 to get the right settings...it has 15 or so semi-auto settings such as landscape, beach, party, text, etc.

Or, guess I can take my Fuji F30 to the clubs and use my Canon SD300 in the daytime! The $50 rebate on the F30 just expired, but BHPhotoVideo is a pretty reputable internet retailer with good prices, or there's always Amazon.com or Dell (good when their running 15% off peripherals).
These pics were taken with my F30 at Spundae with Johan Gielen. These pics were taken with my SD300 at Spundae with Peter Hook a few weeks earlier, for comparison.

Good luck!

i have a Canon SD800 IS. it is VERY VERY good. i love it. michelle couldnt kill the battery in 1 night. it takes a full 2 days to kill it and we all know how much michelle uses a camera.

also the sd800 can use larger sd cards. this doesnt seem like a big deal if you dont take a ton of pictures but if your like me you dont offload right away. and it leaves lots of room for videos.

im getting a 4gb card in a few weeks so that when i go to miami i have lots of room. i doubt ill use all 4gb in 2 days but better to be safe than sorry. ill bring a spare 2gb card with me too just in case but yeah you get the point.

others to consider are the sd700 is or the sd650.

I have F30 too but would recommend whatever lex400sc has (probably a Canon)

Sample pictures from F30 (dscf####.jpg) and Casio 750 (cimg####,jpg) http://www.nextlevel.ws/rizo/070127 -- Usually use the Casio for video (great sound and uses DivX codec so you can record an 1hour plus of high quality video on a 2GB card) or pictures w/ flash because the quality is better than the F30. The F30 does have an option to take two pictures at once, one w/ and w/o flash but it's not great for clubs.

I have a Canon now, but I miss my Sony. The Sony was a lil bigger but it took the best pics and videos. (Great sound!)

5.0 megapixels is enough, sometimes too many megapixels is too detailed and it takes up more room on the memory card.

haha number of megapixels isnt what takes up room. its the resolution you shoot at.

adriana: stick with canon. most people like them a lot as they reproduce very good pics. the sd800 is a little on the pricey side at 400 but its well worth it. ask michelle. when she first started playing with my camera outside the club she was complaining about it not having this setting and that setting. then she used it. shes never complained since. and she tells me she loves it every time she uses it.

Here are some pics I took with my F30 a couple of weekends ago. I shoot in manual mode as auto mode doesn't really work that well in a club environment. Actually, I just about always shoot in manual mode with this camera. For a compact camera, its gives you alot of control. I've had Canons before this camera and I prefer the F30. The F30 is a little bulkier though.

If your camera does decent video, I could see it being quite easy to burn through 4GB at the WMC. ;]

Hell, I can burn through 1-2GB in a good night. Anyways, that's what laptops are for. Dump the media off and worry about it later. =]

EDIT: oh, just 2 days? yeah, you should be cool. :P

I am by no means a cameraholic but I just purchased a Canon SD630 6.0MP 3" and it does the job for me.

The best is the 3" screen on the back. Small and fits in my pocket nicely.

yeah large screens are nice but i would rather have a 2.5" screen and get IS. its nice when your drinking and cant keep your hand super still.

also all of the SD line is small and compact. they all fit in your pocket.
