Actually, I would say its def not normal in SF.
I dunno whats up. I wasn't there. I took the night off to let Michelle go while I watched our son. That said, I have never heard of any pre-sale complaints at Ruby...ever. EVER.
And nothing can be worse than some of the lines I've been in LA. I was about 30th in line once (for Tiesto) and once doors opened it still took over an hour for me to get in...because everyone and their momma was butting and bothering security. That night sucked for me.
Also, firecodes are very serious around here. Maybe it doesnt get Vegas packed, but along with size, the number of exits and path to the exit has to be considered. Ruby basically has the front entrance and thats it. That's the exit. Place can maybe hold more, but if it makes an emergency exit unsafe, then capacity is gonna be brought down. A lot of othe venues have side and back emergency exits..this allows capacity to go up.
There can be a set capacity but if the fire marshall comes and sees it slammed they will halt the line until they do their inspect.
I've been KICKED OUT of a club because of fire code. It was at a Tiesto gig, actually. At Mezzanine years ago, 2002 or 2003. Was in the (enclosed) smoking area, suddenly the doors close and they tell everyone go around front...didnt say why, but I go around front and am in line again for almost two hours....Fire Marshall told them to make us all re-enter because they felt it was over a safe capacity. It was freezing out and my jacket was in coat check. It sucked. I heard that the club wasnt at its permit capacity, but the fire marshall still made them do it.
