So I finally got a chance to go to an EDM night at The Yost in Santa Ana. They do it every week since they first opened, and this past Friday they had Richard Vission. It's OC's only 18 & Over EDM club, but they promote it as 21 & Over.

First, lets get one thing out of the way, THIS WAS NOT YOUR TYPICAL OC CROWD!!! Yup, not your typical Sutra, Heat, etc crowd. This was actually a more laidback sneaker wearing crowd. It was very clear that their Focus (pun intended) wasn't bottle service at all. There were only two tables taken, and one of them was taken by a group of MY friends. Go figure! They were like, "come on woody, come to the table with us." I was like FUCK THAT, I wanna be on the dance floor. lol

A HUGE plus was running into A LOT of my local friends who don't wanna drive to Hollywood to hear EDM. When I mean a lot, I mean A LOT!!! I went expecting to be with my wife the whole night and it turned out to be a huge 90's reunion. lol Def felt right at home. That said, the crowd seemed older, 90's Humpty followers. It wasn't sold out, but it wasn't dead either. None the less, it was an awesome night with awesome friends.

You can tell that most people there were for the music and for Richard himself. It almost felt like I was at a slow night at Avalon. Everyone was in the dance floor facing the DJ. The Focus guys opened up and they did an awesome job. I can honestly say that I liked them better than Richard Vission. Humpty changed, and I wasn't really digging his new sound.

Now for my walk through. We got there around 11:20 pm and there was a short line to get in. Actually, they broke down the lines into 3 separate lines; 18 & Over, 21 & Over, and VIP. Most people were at the 21 & Over line. Security was very friendly and very welcoming. Yes, they're big mofo's but don't let that fool you. They were very friendly.

Once inside, it's just like a smaller version Avalon or maybe even the Mayan. There's a lobby with two entrances to the sides and a stairway to the balcony above. When you go in to the dancefloor, you come in through a raised floor overlooking the dancefloor below. That's where the bar is. Very cool because if it's a packed night, everyone can still see the stage.

The club is pretty dark and it has red drapes all around. My only grip, is the sound system. There was NO BASS whatsoever. We were talking to one of the main people there, and they said it was because the neighbors complain. I'm going back on Sunday for a rock concert, so we'll see if it's true.

The stage is massive. It's just like Avalon's. It goes from side to side. However, that's an area that needs works. They have big LED walls, but they need to position them properly. I don't like how they're set up now. It seems like the DJ is inside a box. I much rather see them hanging.

The lights are pretty cool. They're your typical lighting and again, it's similar to Avalon's.

Capacity is 700 on the main floor and I'm not sure how much it is on the 2nd floor. But 700 is pretty similar to Avalon, they're 800 on the main floor.

The Yost has a lot of potential and it's hard not to compare it to Avalon, but they have a lot of similarities. However, you can tell The Yost needs Avalon's money to push it forward, but it's not bad at all. I can't even think of any other OC club that looks & feels like Avalon or that's even as open minded-EDM friendly as The Yost. For sure it's different than your typical OC bottle service club and all their bling associated with them.

To be in the heart of the Artist Village in Santa Ana is a huge plus, specially because security presence is abundant.

Santa Ana is quickly becoming very nightclub friendly. Now they need to push for a 4am license. Santa Ana used to allow up to 6am back in the 90's, so I'm sure if the right people push for extended hours, it can happen. Santa Ana wants to compete with Fullerton & Long Beach for all the clubs. You can tell and they aren't shy about it. I'm actually surprised the police is very friendly about it. You can see them hanging out outside the clubs.
