We gotta watch ourselves!


I read about this in the L.A. Times. The article advised that fines
were going up considerably. Also, I saw a sign posted in Pasadena. The
fine for going through a yellow light is $384.00.

A friend of my forwarded this to me -- check out #7 -- speeding tickets
for only 3 miles above the speed limit -- Look out Cha Cha! (that's me
) )

New Driving Fines for 2007

1. Carpool lane - 1st time $1068.50 starting 7/1/07 (The $271 posted
on the highway is old). Don't do it again because 2nd time is going to
be double. 3rd time triple, and 4th time license suspended.

2. Incorrect lane change - $380. Don't cross the lane on solid lines or
intersections.

3. Block intersection - $485

4. Driving on the shoulder - $450

5. Cell phone use in the construction zone. - Double fine as of
07/01/07. **Cell phone use must be "hands free" while driving.**

6. Passengers over 18 not in their seatbelts - both passengers and
drivers get tickets .

7. Speeders can only drive 3 miles above the limit.

8. DUI = JAIL (Stays on your driving record for 10 years!)

9. As of 07/01/07 cell phone use must be "hands free" while driving.
Ticket is $285. They will be looking for this like crazy - easy money
for police department.

Don't know how credible the rest are, but as for #9, if you check the DMV Website you still have another year until this goes into effect. Also looks like the fine is only $20 for the first time:

(B) The exemption under subparagraph (A) does not apply to a person driving a pickup truck, as defined in Section 471. (2) An implement of husbandry that is listed or described in Chapter 1 (commencing with Section 36000) of Division 16. (3) A farm vehicle that is exempt from registration and displays an identification plate as specified in Section 5014 and is listed in Section 36101. (4) A commercial vehicle, as defined in Section 260, that is registered to a farmer and driven by the farmer or an employee of the farmer, and is used in conducting commercial agricultural operations, including, but not limited to, transporting agricultural products, farm machinery, or farm supplies to, or from, a farm. (5) A tow truck, as defined in Section 615. (f) This section does not apply to a person driving a schoolbus or transit vehicle that is subject to Section 23125. (g) This section does not apply to a person while driving a motor vehicle on private property. (h) This section shall become operative on July 1, 2008, and shall remain in effect only until July 1, 2011, and, as of July 1, 2011, is repealed.

#9 will become true, in 2009! They say it'll take that long to educate the public that they have to use a hands-free system to talk on the phone.

A law that I have heard little publicity about that goes into effect next year is that you can't text while driving! Think this is a statewide law, but it might just be some city up here. I forget.

Also, between what the law is, and what the cops actually enforce is a different strory.
