From age X (which gets reviewed every so often to determine if it's the appropriate age), a person is free to declare himself an adult.

With this declaration he must make a choice: either subscribe to all the laws of this country (which will be presented to you), take responsibility for your actions knowing the so & so end results of them (fines, imprisonment, death, forced labor, etc), or leave the country.

Untill he makes that decision, this person is the responsibility of his parents/guardians/orphanage/etc, who can revoke that responsibility once the person reaches age Y (also to be reviewd every so often to determine whether it's the appropriate age).


Are there any flaws in this idea? theoretically or practically? (i havent devoted much thought to it to be honest, but i'd still enjoy some interaction to develop the idea further)

You are suggesting that once an person wants to declare him/herself an adult that he now MUST abide by the law and everything along with it, but what about the period of time before he is an adult. Does this mean they can act however they want (i.e. kill, rob, rape, etc)?

parents/guardians/etc will take the heat till that time, and distribute them as they see fit down to the person they're in charge of (in accordance with what the law permits of course).

the parents/guardians/etc can also force the declaration decision between ages X & Y if they can give good enough reasons for it, or even before age X under extreme circumstances.

Only problem I see:

If the kid/now adult doesn't agree with his country, its not really easy to "leave".

I mean, you can always leave a country, but no other country will except you.

why arent countries interested in more citizens (which are not there out of default but out of choice)?

Because this person obviously dont beleive in laws and wants to rape, kill, do drugs etc. Which is harmful for the citizens of the receiving country.

Actually, with the move towards globalization its becoming much easier to travel around the world and specific boundaries are becoming more blurred. This is also a big reason on what makes the war on terrorism so difficult but I digress.

In the not too distant future it might not be so unusual to find people opting to leave their countries because they don't agree with the way things are going. Not that people don't already do that, but it would be a more casual decision and less of a big life changing choice because it would be much more easier to make the move.

Well yes, but why would anyone choose to not live in country A cause s/he is not allowed to rape/kill in that country, if s/he wasn't allowed to do that in country B either? Clearly there is no point in moving to another country if the conditions aren't different in that country. And if the conditions are different in that country, I don't see why they wouldn't accept a person that would accept those conditions.

err, laws include taxes, what if my problem with my country is the sort of taxes i have to pay here?
