Oh, wow.
I can't beleive there's so much hate here. Melech_mike, what's gotten into you? You've turned into another tiesto14. Whatever happened to the concept of the Political Forum, discussing ideas objectively? Instead it's become a hotbed of throwing insults and putting down others, in part due to nationalism and racism.
"Thus did Nationalism rear its ugly head once more..."
People! How about you get off your arses, stop listening to your biased egos, and look at things with open eyes?
Go to John's website and read the pledge carefully!
| quote: |
Because I am one of the millions of people against the war;
| (my italics)
Notice, how it doesn't say against America?
| quote: |
And because the American government has made it clear that it won’t listen to world opinion;
|
Does anyone seriously, seriously think this is not true?
| quote: |
And because the symbols of American power are its corporations and their brands;
|
Ok, this one's a little wishy-washy, see my discussion below.
| quote: |
I hereby pledge to boycott Brand America, from the moment the war begins and to the best of my ability until the empire learns to listen.
|
Notice, "I hereby pledge to boycott Brand America."
As in, Imperial America.
As in, American Hegemony.
Not "America" per se, nor American products, nor American ideals, or anything of the sort!
Do you see the distinction?
I think that the line, "And because the symbols of American power are its corporations and their brands," is misleading, because (as I see it) it's intended to give force behind the "Brand America" image, NOT to mean that American corporations and brands must be boycotted! Notice how it doesn't say explicitly that that should be done! It just says, those are its symbols.
John, I'd suggest considering rephrasing that line to clarify this very important point.
Otherwise, it might sound a little hypocritical to those who are not willing to read plainly, but instead choose to read what they want to read, and to interpret it in their own way, as we can see in this thread.
