Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki is about to announce that militant leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has been killed, Iraqi state television reports.
The leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq is considered the figurehead of the Sunni insurgency.
Al-Qaeda has been blamed for scores of bombings that have killed hundreds of Shias and US forces in Iraq.
The Jordanian-born fugitive appeared in a video recording earlier this year, reproaching the US for its "arrogance".

Iraq militants claim al-Zarqawi is dead
Top terrorist Zarqawi 'dead'
From correspondents in Baghdad
08jun06
IRAQI Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has announced the killing of the al-Qaeda chief in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, Al-Iraqiya state television reports.
"The prime minister announces the killing of Jordanian Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the head of an organisation known as Al-Qaeda in Mesopotamia," the television reported.
The report said Zarqawi had been killed south of Baghdad.
The US military said it would have no comment until after the prime minister had spoken publicly.
Meanwhile Reuters reports that Zarqawi was killed in a US air attack in Baghdad, according to an American ABC news report.
"Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has been killed in Baghdad during a bombing raid," ABC said.
A Pentagon press officer could not immediately confirm the report.
In other news, a new promising young insurgent has claimed the title of Al-Qaeda leader in Iraq.
The terrorist is dead! Kill the terrorist!

Good riddance to someone who was hurting Iraqis more than any other group of people. Iraq does not need foreigners in their country whether they be American or fundamentalists. Unfortunately the former appears to be contingent on the latter. I hope this pans out.

Zarqawi Scheduled for Martyrdom
June 7, 2006: The relationship between terrorist leader Abu Musab al Zarqawi and and the mainline al Qaeda leadership continues to deteriorate. Zarqawi's recent audio messages have not only attacked the U.S. and the Shia-dominated government in Iraq, but also Iran. He's even claiming that the U.S., Iran, and Shia in general, are in cahoots to destroy Islam. He has also called for continued attacks against Shia.
Except for his verbal attacks on the U.S. and the Iraqi government, he is almost totally distanced himself from the central leadership. Other al Qaeda leaders have been trying to down play anti-Iranian and anti-Shia rhetoric, and have been strongly discouraging attacks on civilians.
Given that Zarqawi has become a loose cannon and that his actions are handicapping Al Qaeda's efforts, it seems reasonable to expect that an accident may befall him at some point in the near future. If handled right it can be made to look like he went out in a blaze of glory fighting American troops or that he was foully murdered. Either way, al Qaeda gets rid of a problem and gains another "martyr."
Anyone up for a pool of when we capture ol' Binny? How about before the November elections.. anyone?

the hell are you talkin about? the former is contingent on the Iraqi government and whether they want us there or not. the latter, "unfortunately", will always there and everywhere in one scope or another.
it's what decent Iraqis are capable of that is contingent upon anything.

So the future of Iraq now lies in the hands of this new promising young insurgent, I hope he is as good as Zarqawi.
