Zodiac - Initiations (my first trance set)

Hi folks.

As you see, I am pretty new here...
Well, I am pretty new to trance, as well.
I just got bored of all that house around the corner,
everybody listening to it, everybody playing it,
one new mainstream hit without distinction to the other...
So I thought, I might try something new...

Well, one could say, DJing is new to me, anyway...
...with only about one year of practice...
But I hope, newbies are well seen here and not scared away...
Even if they still make some mistakes (and maybe some more)...
Nobody is perfect... and even less at the beginning

Anyway, hiding is for cowards.
So I just went out straight to beatport,
got myself some nice tracks that I belive will make a fine set
and fired my decks up...

Author: Zodiac
Set Name: Initiations (in Trance)
Set Length: ~2h
File Size: ~200MB
Encoding: MP3 ~196 (variable rate)

Further Information:
The set starts quite slow at 125 as the crowd is probably still on a house groove from the preceeding act.
But it already speeds up in the first track to 130 and after I believed they got used to the trance tunes it raises to 135 (track 4) and then to 140 (track 5) to show everyone, what is coming up next.
After a short moment at this pace I turned down the speed back to 135 (track 7) so everyone who still did not jump on the fast train had a chance to get onto the groove.
But this time the 135 bpm is mixed with a harder beat than at the beginning, so the overall set feeling is still increasing in power.
With track 10 we are back to the 140 where the set remains for the next hour, and still increasing in energy until the end.
Well, nearly to the end it drops back to 135 (track 17), still trancy, but now with the distinguished house beat, to prepare the crowd for the next act.
But before giving them over, a slow and melodic finish at 130 (track 18) so they can rest, breath again and so my follower will have full attention when starting up with his intro.

Playlist:
01 Vernis - Take The World (Original Mix)
02 Fragma - Toca Me (Inpetto 2008 Remix)
03 Dubfire - I Feel Speed (Original Club Mix Instrumental)
04 The Droyds - All I Ever Wanted (Dusty Kid Needs Love Dub)
05 Lost Universe - Beyond Sunset (Original Mix)
06 Aimee B - Breaking Free (Mark Arbor's Kuroshio Mix)
07 Talisman & Hudson - Leaving Planet Earth (Dousk Remix)
08 Stimulator, Georgia - We Rise (Georgia Dub)
09 Water Lilly - The Sleepwalker (Richard Bartz' Acid Scout Mix)
10 Rank 1 - Beats At Rank-1 Dotcom (Extended Mix)
11 Mus-T - Pixies Of Chaos (Original Mix)
12 Denga, Manus - Darkness (Vengeance Mix)
13 Inflexion - Unusual Experience (Original Mix)
14 Jonas Hornblad - Like You (Drama Remix)
15 Der Mystik - Technological Sky (Original Mix)
16 Kamil Polner - Inscape (Original Mix)
17 Tony De Vit - The Dawn (Bryan Kearny Remix)
18 Skautch - Forever Original Mix)
19 4Mal - Time Is Burning feat. Gliss (Gabriel Lukosz Remix)

Equipment:
The set was played on a M-Audio Xponent attached to a PC using Torq.
Beatmatching should not be a problem though, neither the matching of bars...
Well, matching of segments was quite ok even if I had no idea where to get in at some tracks (so I waited for the next sign and this is why some of the tracks went out of the extro while the next one was still somewhere in midth of its intro).

Technique:
I had a huge headdache on the EQs...
I am just used to house beats and in trance it sometimes is madness...
Normally I am mixing like this:
Middle EQ to -6db on the new track, and while going up with the line fader, decreasing the playing tracks bass.
If the midth do not collide, I continue until the new track is fully in (except the -6db midth)... and if the master gets too loud, I decrease the line fader of the playing track a little...
When the bass fully changed to the new track i start increasing the midth and going down with the other line fader, depending on the melodies that are on...

It worked quite well on some of the transitions...
But on others it did absolutely not.
I practiced this set now 3 times (in the same order to get used to it).
Now this is the best as good as it got...
Not good enough...
And so I thought, I will probably need professional advice, cause I still could not figure out a way how to make these transitions work without clashing frequencies...

How do you guys do it?
Is there a trick I still did not get, or is it something else?
Or ist it simply, because I am a noob with hardly a year of practice?
But see for yourself...

Link:
As I am not allowed to post direct links, there are alternatives to get the set...
1) Accessing my page --> www.areax.de\zodiac and the link can be found there.
I hid it from casual encounters with black text color on black background...
Just mark everything with the mouse (or by CTRL+A)
2) Or by sending me a message and I will gladly answer with a direct link.

P.D: I will not be mad at any hard votes...
Please tell the truth at any circumstances, even if it hurts...
I am here to learn.

Direct Link

I just saw on some other threads,
that direct links are allowed, indeed...

So here is the direct link to the set.
I hope that makes it more easy downloading it...

Hm...
the actual statistics shows 65 views...
but only 2 downloads...
and no replies...

the house forum had few replies as well,
but at least several downloads...

did I post it in the wrong place,
as the set is no promotion but a call for help?
but I could not find a noob section for mixes...

Sad newbies seem not to be welcome

huu... -1
was it that bad?

well,
at least I would have hoped some feedback,
even if it would be one, explaining the -1

but it looks like newbies are not welcome here...
sorry I asked for help...
won't happen again

i'll grab this and give you some feedback. next time don't post polls about your mix in the thread, it seems to piss ppl off.

i listened to about half of this. your transitions are too sudden and the mix doesn't flow very well. also phrasing if off in some places, so is beatmatching. you need to work on eq-ing and fading. the xponent isn't the best equipment to learn on. you need to get used to decks and a real mixer.

i wouldn't say this is completely terrible. but it does need more work. sounds kinda like me about a year ago. keep practicing.

hi bucke

thanx for your feedback...
i already was getting quite desperate that nobody replied...
I'll try to leave out the poll next time.

the transitions are about 1 minute or more.
if I do them even longer, the melodies would clash, wouldn't they?
i heard that on trance the transitions are 4 minutes... the next track comes in when the actual is about halftime... wouldn't that lead to heavy frequency interferences?

the missing flow, does it have to to with track selection or order of the playlist or is it more a problem of EQ and fading?
i am still used to the beat-fading of house... probably i will have to try continuous fading following the long trance synths?
with the EQ i still don't know how it is used in trance...
in house it is simply used to kill the interfering kick when mixing.
(or at least I learned it that way, maybe it was wrong...)

the xponent was a cheap way i could connect to the computer.
2x1210 and a mixer were not affordable for me
and it is much better than a hercules DJC or a behringer BCD

Hi ZodiacX. Didn't listen to the set since I don't enjoy that kind of music (house/minimal) but here are some hints for next time you post.

- Don't post polls.
- Don't bump a lot your mix. One bump and if there is still no response just leave it.
- First sets usually don't get replies anyway. Once you post more good sets people will start commenting.
- Don't think that the reason you don't get any response is because you don't play mainstream music. Usually it's quite the opposite. Here, the majority likes sets which consist of rare good tracks which aren't whored in clubs over and over again.
- Don't make such long posts

And last but not least, don't give up. We were all newbies at one point, keep practicing and eventually you will improve. Wish you all the best.

hi megadansky

on my new set i tried most of that.
i left out the poll and just gave some short infos (anyway i already told all important stuff in here and it does not have to be repeated over and over, does it...)

so lets see, if it works.
my sets are probably not that good to attract people (i am still here to learn, anyway) but i hope i will improve soon.
