ive got a question not exactly about the dj contest posted below but a thought inspired by the contest. In the first few posts a question came up about whether or not this was a contest for vinyl/cd mixes or just computer mixes whereupon the response was that there were two seperate contests. i have personally never tried to mix using mp3s or cds (just vinyl!) but are so many people now using this media that vinyl is getting pushed to the side? what media do you use to mix and what would you say most people are using now? what are the advantages of using mp3? im not trying to insult computer based djs but ive heard that a two year old could mix with this kind of a setup. holla back

I don't see any advantages of using mp3 instead of vinyl/cds. If I had the money I would buy a mixer and some decks (I'll do that soon), and forget about Traktor (or any other mixin' prog). So I'm using mp3s cuz I love music and I love dj-ing, but I would upgrade to some real gear anytime.


A good thing about mixing programs is that you can learn the basics of dj-ing, learn about song structure and other stuff like beatmatching, phrasematching, eq-ing, etc. When you move to real equipment you just need to get used to it, which is very diffrent from a PC program, but you already know what you need to do. In the DJ Booth forum are a lot of people that just bought tts or cd decks asking "Err .... how do I beatmatch?" or " how do I use my eq?" An mp3 dj that will upgrade to real gear would know all that, but ofcourse he'll need some time to get used to control the equipment.


And I don't think "a two year old could mix with this kind of a setup". Actualy I think mp3 dj-ing is harder than cd/tt dj-ing cuz you have way better control on a knob or on a fader than on you're mouse or keyboard. Right? There is one other thing : beatmatching. If you use the auto sync function, yap it's alot easyer, but you can also use the clasic metod, using you're ears.


That's about all I wanted to say. Once again I don't tink mp3 is better than vinyl/cd and I respect all djs using it (especialy vinyl djs)

i started on software mixing, and it really does help a shitload when u make the transition over to real equipment.

as logn as no-one tries to kid themselves, software mixing isnt dj'ing
but it helps you learn the basics of beatmatching, structure and timing and all those good things..
