I've contemplated some vocal effects, but I don't want anything lyrical in there, as I feel that it would take focus from the music itself. Imo there are a ton of great tracks out there that should never have been allowed to have been made vocal tracks. As much as I love vocals, there is to me no point in adding vocals merely for the sake of vocals; they have to add to the soundscape without invading the space of the elements already there - consequently I always build my vocal tracks around the vocals, I hate adding vocals to a piece once the instrumental work has been done, then I have to go back and redo the instrumental so that it all works as one. But yes, I may end up using some vocal effects, for their atmospheric properties. Want the focus to be on the stabbed chords aswell as the hook that I'll end up adding eventually. Second to that will be the atmospheric elements, contrasted by the bass and percussionwork. Still need to add some lead percs aswell though, something distinct to give the track something percussive to remember it by aswell.

First off, thanks for the very flattering comments. PvD's stuff is that of true talent, and some of his works are some of my absolute favourite tracks (his piano mix of Face 2 Face for instance is absolutely amazing). I agree with you on the percussion comment though, nothing ground-breaking atm, as I've basically just tried to lay a foundation that will build drive, whilst all sitting nicely together without clashing or feeling off, level- or eq-wise. As mentioned above, the percussion needs some work, and I also need to work in some atmospherics to help the buildup deliver more power, aswell keep it after the crescendo. Again, thanks for the kind words and feedback.

If I was to make a crit, it would be that it lacks the groove and swing of a lot of classic trance. The kick and bass are too 4/4 to really label it as classic style, but I see where you are going with it. |
Glad you like the subtle approach to trance, as it is my absolute favourite of approaches. I'm not opposed to the idea of a wall of sound, but I believe that that wall must still give room for all elements to breath. If woven together properly, I believe the sound spectrum can be almost full, yet allowing clarity and space in the mix. Crit is what I'm here for, so thank you kindly. I'll agree with you that it's mostly drive and not much bounce to it, I'm hoping adding some percussion work will help resolve part of that issue, but I'm also thinking that alot of what made the actually rather progressive melodic trance of back then so great, was that it had such brilliant cooperation between cool bassy effects and wonderfully chunky basslines and some distinct elements in their percussions. I'd say "acid" but I don't think it'd sit all too well in this track.
