I just want to say that subtractor sucks. You can make nice sounds but
not the real fat ones. The 303 of Rebirth is thousand times fatter than the Saws of Subtractor.

Has anyone ever managed to make a real fat sound with that synth ( ->like Ferry Corsten, Cosmic Gate or maybe
Rank 1 )?

[ Perhaps I am expecting too much of it , but I have made fatter Sounds with my old keyboard from Yamaha ]

the main problem with the Subtractor is the Polyphony (voice,s)
altho you can use 99 voice,s it sounds like 5 on a hardsynth. thats why it sounds so thin compared to hardware.

just think of it this way, since its so hard to produce great sounds
with these softsynths and when you have learn't how to produces something sounding ok .
Then and when you get some good hardware synths, just think of how much you have learn't from trying so hard with the softsynths

Two things might help....Try adding a chorus to the subtractor. You
can turn down all the knobs on it and hit the Tab key to see the back of the rack, now you'll see the chorus unit has a left and right output, which you can assign to seperate mixer channels and pan left/right to get a more fuller sound.

The other option (I cut this from a message board at reasonstation.net).......

The idea is simple:
with the 4 bus of Reason, you can play up to 4 module at the same time (put each module on the same channel of the different bus).
If you load 4 subtractors, you can obtain a big sound, especially for pads sounds.
So i've made some examples, with 4 Subs for the main sounds, several effects and 2 other Sub just for modulate panning ot the 1 and 2 synths with their lfos.

The result ?
Go on my website, at the section called "Synth".
you'll find about 10 songs where each one is dedicated to one sound.
When you load them, just play on the keyboard !!! (don' t forget to modify
your midi settings, the bus A,B,C and D must receive midi input !)
Let me know what you think about it !!!

This above method works really well! Reason is too cool for words!
I've had it for almost a year now, and have just begun to tap into the possibilities....keep playing with it.

@cortex: Great Idea with the Chorus and the 4 busses , I had tried something similar in the past to make a fat arpeggiator sound( -> ferry costen style ),...but its far from good sound, I'll keep on improving .

@Peter Campbell: I am sure to own a hardsynth in the future, but I think you're right, that's it's cool for practise and the whole Reason is anyway
cheaper than any good hardware-synth.


I also think that the distortion- Unit of Rebirth produces a better sound than the one used in Reason, also the 303s sound much better than most of subtractor patches. And finally the compressor also works
better in Rebirth. I wonder if this some marketing policy of Propellerheadz to make people buy also Rebirth if they own Reason.

If you want a phat sounding 303, download Peff's 303 RE-fill from the
propellerheads website. He multi-sampled the 303 from Rebirth into this. It sounds quite good.

I also have tried to get that "fat" lead sound with subtractor, but it didn't go that well. Actually none of the softsynths I've tried have done this. The thing is, I couldn't be arsed using days and weeks to create a lead and not create music, so I do my best for now, and I'll replace the synths when I finally get some hardware. A friend of mine have a korg trinity, and damn there's sweet sounds comming out of that one. Not so much analog lead type of sounds, but great atmospheric pads and real instruments. A beauty

the solution is sampling... I got some sounds from a fat synthesizer of a friend of mine, we made them together in long nights and now I 've got finally some fat samples to use.
This is why I started another thread about finding original samples from fat synthesizer and workstations...@ net.
This seems the only chance to make fat sounds.
By the way I liked the lead sound of the DJ sakin and friends remix
( i think it was Lightworks who made the remix...)

i say use NN19 instead of subtractor....or use couple of subtractors at the same time

the synths used in this sound ok, kinda ferry style (it's a ferry rmx, duh). it's just 2 subtractors playing the same. i did not make them though.

To tell you the truth, you will not get a really fat sound unless you use REAL equipment. But after learning some major tweaking techniques with the subtractor, you can make it heavier by messing around with the oscillators, changing waves sounds and octaves. Also, when you create a note at the C5 octave for example, try finding the bass note of it by going down to the C2 octave or maybe lower. If you are playing a note in the key of E, try finding the most powerful bass note at the lower octaves, but remain in the same key.

@trancenation: Great stuff, unless the rate of 64 k is far from good quality. Can you tell me where to get a better version of this track, I really like !

Is the bass note the same note as I play
in the high octave, e.g. D5 - Bassnote D2 or lower, OR is the bassnote
alyways C when I am playing in the Cm. Perhaps you could tell me a little bit more about this "bass note stuff"
