Elliott Poston - Infected (Original Mix)

Hey guys, just finished a new track. Started a real progressive jam and then just turned into trance. Let me know what you guys think. Cheers.

I'll take a listen to it in a bit and see if any ideas come up, but my honest impression of it, yesterday, was that it's right at that threshold where critic of it is blurred between the valid complaint and the personal preference projected onto it.

Liking this a lot! Maybe a bit too compressed for my taste though. I think the beat should punch through more but apart from that I think it's great!

XiJaro ur productions always sound so clean! What do you use to master? I've been runnng everything through TRacks3 and doing some tweeks. But when I get big layered sounds it's hard to keep the kicks up front without the liberal use of compression. I still need to EQ some the instruments more accurately and do some additional delays to spread the percussion out a little. But I still not sure I can pull much from the kick drum as it is : /

The kind of processing that's on the master is not really what will make your track sound clean in my experience. It can give it some extra power and glue the track together but your mixing of the individual elements is what matters most.

It's only in the last few months or so that I think I really improved in that department and the remix I did for your track Shakedown is where it shows. It's by far the cleanest sounding track I've made (I've been working on better tracks but finishing them is a problem) and that's because I really spent a lot of time on the individual elements, working a lot with EQ and compression, to get them to sit just right in the mix.
I'll admit that the master bus processing does make it sound a bit better (in the case of the Shakedown remix I used NomadFactory's Retrology EQ, Glue Compressor and Stillwell's Event Horizon to finish it off) but without all the hard work done on the separate elements it would still be a mess.

For your particular problem with the kick drowning in the mix I usually find that when that happens in one of my tracks it's various sounds using up space in the mix because they have too much low end. Making sure that all sounds that don't need those frequencies get cleaned up usually helps a lot. Even when a sound doesn't really have much going on in that range it usually can't hurt to apply some eq to reduce it even further. This actually goes for the entire frequency range; a bassline will usually not need much high frequencies and some of your mid-range sounds might also sit better in the mix after some cutting. A spectrum analyser helps a lot with spotting problems you sometimes don't hear.
It can also be that you need to apply some automation on your EQ so that sounds that fill your low-end in the breakdowns don't lose anything there but get filtered when your kick and bass come in.
Obviously sidechain can also make room for your kick. I used that on nearly every element in my remix.

It can be hard to hear what you're doing if you're adjusting the separate sounds while there's some heavy master-bus processing going on so it might be useful to turn that off for a while and let the mix breathe. I usually don't put anything on there until I have mixed most of my sounds the way I like it.

I think your track sounds really quite nice, it's only in the busy parts that the mix get's muddy and your kick loses power so I recommend cleaning up the individual elements and maybe try some more sidechain

Great groove man... seriously. It's a good track I can hear with Dance floor appeal once you nail down the EQ a little bit more.

The panning sound you insert around 2:20 is cool, but comes through the mix a little too loud in my opinion. The percussion comes off a bit light, but that's okay considering the amount of stuff you have going on otherwise.

At 4:15 I get a distinct air of change in the song as it gets noticeably more progressive during this point and mellows out. I'm not sure that's the right thing to do, but the break out of that section seems awesome. Part of me wants to say it would be better... dropping into the big synth at the 5:10 mark earlier. It possibly may even out the emotions of the track.

Needless to say I'm trying to find issues and they are hard to ID. I'd say send me it (128kbps please) so I can shop it to the Swarm. (I ask for low quality to protect your work mate, as I hope it gets signed and exposed somewhere!)

Great track nonetheless man!

Alright. I played it on my headphones, last time. I'm using my speakers, now, and hearing some highs in the hi-hats that are just a little irksome. THAT, however, could be an artifact made by the sound-cloud player.

Apart from that, however, XDR did a damn fine job of oblivating any feedback I could have offered. Good luck with this tune. It definitely rocks.

Great track, would love to play this in my sets.

I do however feel that the following needs to be fixed. Kick does not have enough presence in the mix and needs work.

I also agree with the over compression statement, I think it has been squeezed a bit too much either by limiter or compressor.

Other than that great work and definitely stands out.

Cheers
Nem

Wow thanks guys! Your feedback has been absolutely great. Its so helpful to get outside perspectives from other producers/TAs. I've heard the track so many times its hard to listen with unbiased ears. Plus I spend so much time in the studio doing stuff I forget what stuff is supposed to sound like. I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about. When I get home from work today I am going to throw on my headphones and hash out all the EQ details. I can think of a few instruments right off hand that I know are doing a fair bit of the phasing on the kick. Then I'll replace the current soundcloud file with the new when its done.

Also, darthseph, you have a PM. and if any of you guys want the 128kbps version send me a PM too.
