Confused [Prog?] OrgaNik - Out Cold (Full 320)

Hi y'all.

I realized it's been quite a while since I posted anything here, so I decided to whip something up for you this afternoon
Seriously, though - this is a track that started out as a simple performance test for my brand spanking new PC, but it turned out to be pretty good so I guess I can't damage my "reputation" by posting it here.

This is a proggy track that concentrates more on the atmospheric side of things rather than the melodies. Influenced quite heavily by mr. Oliver Lieb and his Paragliders guise in particular.

Here we go then:
OrgaNik - Out Cold (6:16, 320kbps, 14.3MB)

Enjoy.

Ok,
This is the first time I'm hearing something from you, and I'm expecting it to be a bit prog, but that question mark in your title is keeping my mind that much more open.

Like the pad that you open with, that goes all through the song, something mellow yet rich. Percussion elements are well included, and I particularly like the hat structures.

Leading on to the bass is just that small break and rev crash, which is much different from the mega breakdowns that are part of most of the music I listen to. Simple, yet effective.

The bassline goes well with the percs that come on a bit later, and I'm expecting the pad to kick in at some point to combine everything together. That small break with the reverse crash I mentioned, occurs 3 or 4 times in short succession...just a tad bit repetitive.

The part of the track I didnt like was when the pad played with one hat and one percussion, it was too 'dead' for me for want of a better word, but the lush pad that comes in after that makes up for that segment ably.

I m really not into such music, but I liked the simpleness and almost sereneness of this track. I would have loved the bass to change pitch at some point, but other than that and that small 'dead' period, I think this is topnotch. Production is also clean and crisp.

I cant say this will be on repeat or anything, but I liked it. A lot.

Thanks for the feedback. The repetitiveness is more or less intentional in this particular track since, as I said, it focuses more on the overall atmosphere.

This really isn't like anything like I've done before so it might not be the best "first track" to hear from me (then again my "sound" changes all the time anyway).

This has got me groovin'

I can't say there is really anything i think needs to be improved, but i do feel that its missing something. The melody can move a little more, maybe disjunct the melody at one point, add to the adventure. It probably doesn't have to be much.

it may be a perfect candidate for vocals, something that could help to carry the song.

if you would like, critique one of mine (i need it! check sig)

I really like the details that have gone into that clap. I think it feels a bit loud, though.

I'm feeling that deadness that smakmagic was talking about. There in the second minute, it just kind of dies. It picks up, but it had some trouble there for a while. It did do a good job of emphasizing the atmosphere there, though.

I could hear this opening up a really nice techno set. There's this incredible groove that is very understated, but still powerful. Good work.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean with "deadness". There's new stuff being introduced pretty much every 16/32 bars until the breakdown, it's just very elaborate as I wanted to have the overall feel kind of understated.

That being said, this is result of only one afternoon of work and I will be doing some minor alterations here and there as I think I could go quite far with this... Also, Mart's remixed this and I think I'll have a crack at doing a breaks version also.

I was expecting a much heavier kick after reading that, hehe.
Much chunkier rhythms in general actually.

You've got the synths nailed down perfectly, though. Definitely looking forward to the other versions.

I read the comments about 'deadness' prior to listening and I can't say that I noticed it. I'll shove my remix up here once I come up with a new alias. 2009, then.

Really nice, chilled, understated prog. Some transitions were a little abrupt but on the whole the piece gels together really seamlessly and as you said you've only just begun on the track. I love the fact that you've come up with a really unique main sound, it works well and isn't boring. Not a big fan of the clap, it sounded a little dry and harsh for me. Overall a top tune!

Very nice track with some nice atmosphere. This is not my favorite from you, but it is nice in its own right, and is definitely different. Pad sounds great, and I liked a lot of the percs... though I agree that the clap was a little...loud...or something. Not quite sure. The kick seems weak, but I am listening on the crappiest headphones possible right now, so that could be my own fault. I need to give this a proper listen at home.

I understand that this is supposed to be a bit "understated" type of prog, but it didn't reach out and grab me as I still probably expected it to. I could see myself opening a set with it, though.

The breaks remix seems like a great idea, but that might be due to the fact that I've loved everything you've ever touched that had a breakbeat. Looking forward to it.

As a listener and I stress the word listener I think this track is boring and needs more work, but has potential. Let me tell you why I feel this way:

-Bassline sounds amateurish/noobish. It stands out too much. Use a more professional sounding bassline and tone it down. I'm not a producer so maybe 'toning it down' is not the correct term but if you listen to The Last Atlant - In Leaps & Bounds the bass is heavy, but because of the low frequencies it doesn't stand out too much and sounds beautiful.
-Rework/expand on the drums in the beginning.
-Take advantage of the breakdown and make the track grow progressively until the end. It doesn't go anywhere after the breakdown and instead goes back to where you started. I got all excited for nothing.
-Vary the keys/chords of the track more. The whole track is set to one key and barely changes, hence the boring part.

Aah that explains it! No wonder you rarely change key in the whole track. Maybe Lieb could pull it off, but this track doesn't do it for me.
