2006.09.04. promise cherry beach monday afternoon soundsystem
"As the warm weather winds down we say farewell to another gorgeous summer of sunny afternoons down at Cherry Beach. Join us for the closing event tomorrow with friends and friends of friends.
David and Irving would love to thank all the performers (over 70 of them!) who so generously have given their time and talent for our enjoyment over the last couple of months. And a huge thanks to everyone who has come down to share the afternoons together and helped in their own special way to make these days so fine.
Last week came to an end with the arrival of the police and by-law officer who made us shut down and disperse early in the afternoon. We’ve been in contact with public officials and with their help and support we hope that this monday goes off without similar incident. But if the police do show up we encourage everyone to be respectful and friendly and united in our right to gather peacefully and responsibly in this public park.
While it may be necessary to pack up the sound system that doesn’t have to mean the end of the afternoon. We can stay there, or relocate directly south on the actual beach - that’s what we did last sunday. There’ll be a number of live, non amplified performers to keep the music going, and regardless it’ll be fun to hang out with or without music this one last time. So feel free to bring a drum, flute, guitar, trombone, couple of rocks to bang together, whatever’s your thing, and add to the gathering in your own way.
And remember we leave updates on David’s land line 416 323 0361 about how things are going.
The line up for this monday:
3.00 Kati
4.00 Electric Opus - live psychedelic metal
4.30 Dubmatix - live dub
5.30 Yoshi and Chi - live sitar, digeridoo, loops
6.30 Mike Lambert
7.30 Maracatu Nunca Antes - live samba band
8.00 Ian Guthrie
9.00 Jelo
10.0 Jamie Kidd
visuals by Scott and Mike
Bring a frisbee, bring a kite, bring a handy sweater, bring a dog (only nice dogs), bring your lover and a hammock. And pass the time on this lazy sunny sunday afternoon with friends and friends of friends.
3 to 11pm - east end of the park, in from the water.
Directions to Cherry Beach: Take Lakeshore Blvd east of downtown just past Parliament. Turn south down Cherry Street all the way to the end, then go east into the parking lot on your left. At the furthest east of the lot walk along the bike path and turn left up the trail into the woods... you'll hear music. If you end up at the lake, you're going the wrong way.
Biking to Cherry Beach is easy along the paths beside the lake, a new bus route from Union Station goes down there too.
Things to think about: Please bring only what you plan to take back out with you - leave no trace. Pack something warm (it gets cool after dark by the lake) and something to sit on and also something to keep sun off your head. Drink lots of water. Bring something to share.
And remember while down at the beach to take care of your friends, your neighbours, and what's going on around you. It's what makes the sunday afternoons happen smoothly.
If the weather turns grey the day of, call 416 323 0361 for the contingency plan."
